Hawthorne Happenings
News for the City of Good
Neighbors from an Old Guy
Named Norb Huber
State of the City
The weather may not be the greatest.
The rain and cold temps continue. But,
that won’t stop Mayor Vargas from
delivering his annual positive speech to the
greater Hawthorne community at the Hawthorne
Chamber’s State of City Luncheon to be held
this Thursday, March 7th starting with registration
at 11:30 a.m. at the Memorial Center.
It’s always a great way to see everyone who is
part of the City of Good Neighbors, business
people, community residents, City officials
and all of those dignitaries from surrounding
cities. There have been a lot of things that
have happened this past year to make this
year’s speech and presentation a worthwhile
listen. The Hawthorne Citizen of the Year
Award will be announced also. The future of
Hawthorne is bright and the City is moving in
the right direction.
Pancake Breakfast
Saturday, March 16th is the day you will want
to mark for the annual Hawthorne Historical
Society Pancake Breakfast to be held at the
Hawthorne Museum located at Jim Thorpe
Park, from 8 to 11 a.m. You can’t find a better
breakfast for $5 in town. The pancakes
and coffee will be hot, the OJ cold, and the
sausage and bacon will be tasty. There will be
a raffle with the proceeds going to support the
work of the Historical Society. This event is
a great way to see the museum and also meet
some good neighbors from Hawthorne. Make
an effort to attend. Who knows? You might
even see me there. I can’t stay away from an
event that I helped to start a few years back.
It would be great to see some of my 18 and
one half loyal readers. (The one half can’t
make up his mind whether to read my crap
or not each week.)
Thanks
It’s amazing what one little word can do
to build bridges and make things better in a
relationship. One word we don’t hear as often
these days is “thanks”. Whenever I hear someone
say thanks to me, it’s like everything is good.
Even though I didn’t help them out that much
and I really don’t need to hear the word, it is
nice to know that someone is thankful for my
efforts. It only takes one word to motivate me
to help again. Saying thanks seems to make
everyone happier. The greatest gift that I ever
received was at my baptism when I was all of
one week old. Through water and the Word,
God claimed me as His own and gave
me eternal life. Ever since I have been
old enough to understand what God
did for me, my life has been a life of
“thanks living”. I love others and do
good works out of thanksgiving for
what God did for me. That might sound
strange to some people who think we
earn our way through the pearly gates. No,
it’s not about me doing enough to earn it. It’s
all about God loving me and Christ dying for
me. Because God has done it all, I serve Him
and love my neighbor. Christ has set me free
to live and enjoy life. Life can be one daily
party after another. That is why I can say, have
a cold one and enjoy life. I want to share that
freedom and joy with you my readers. Thanks
for reading my column, thanks for being my
neighbor, thanks for living this life in a thankful
way. Try it this week. Try saying thanks
more. Thank God, thank your neighbor, oh
yes, thank your old lady or your old man.
Life will be a lot more enjoyable if you say
thanks more often.
Pi Day and
Saint Patty’s Day and Lent
A little Math refresher: Pi (π) is the ratio
of a circle’s circumference to its diameter.
Pi is a constant number, meaning that for all
circles of any size, Pi will be the same. The
diameter of a circle is the distance from edge
to edge, measuring straight through the center.
The circumference of a circle is the distance
around. The numerical approximation of Pi
is 3.14, so March 14th has become Pi since
it is 3-14. Some Math classes bring in pies
to eat to celebrate Pi Day. I love pie, banana
cream is my favorite. Now Pi day is even
more special for me, it’s the birthday of my
granddaughter, Jordan, who turns 8 this year.
Maybe we’ll have pie instead of birthday cake.
Saint Patrick’s Day, “the Day of the Festival of
Patrick”, is a cultural and religious celebration
held on March 17th, the traditional death date
of Saint Patrick (c. AD 385–461), the foremost
patron saint of Ireland. You know what we all
are supposed to do on St. Patty’s Day, have
several cold ones of course. It don’t matter
if you are Irish or not, everyone and anyone
can wear green, drink green beer and party.
So you get the impression that most of our
holidays include food and drink? Finally,
we have just started the season of Lent in the
church year. There are forty days, excluding
Sundays, that give us an opportunity to reflect
on what Christ has done for us in preparation
for our glorious Easter celebration. Don’t
