By Sid Kato, Array Systems, Inc. Hackers are people that want to get access to your computer network and access your data from your servers and computers. A few years ago, hackers would most often gain access through your wireless network. Hopefully, we’ve all secured our wireless networks and have these access points protected with hard-to-break passwords. Today, hackers may get access by stealing equipment. Laptops, desktop computers, servers and phones can be a “jackpot” for hackers. Most small businesses don’t secure their equipment with cables and physical locks. Additionally, when equip- ment is stolen if your data is not encrypted, your storage device is easily accessible and can be moved right onto the hacker’s computer. Believe it or not, the most common way hackers access your information is by invitation. An employee invites a hacker into the system without their knowledge. This may happen when opening an email attachment that looks like an electronic birthday card from a friend. Once the file is opened (by clicking on it) a program is installed onto your computer and notification is sent to the hacker that it has successfully infiltrated your system. Another common way a hacker gains access is by an employee accessing a website on the internet that contains a hackers program. If you don’t have updated malware installed on your computer you will not even know it has happened. One of the most frustrating attacks, sadly, becoming more common is Crypto Locking programs. These programs encrypt your files so you can’t use your computer. The only way to eliminate this program is to completely wipe out your hard drive and restore from a backup. If you don’t have a backup then you are held ransom. Typically the hackers demand “ransom money”, usually about $500, to “release” your data. The payment is made in bitcoin - the new online currency that is hard to trace. As we’ve seen recently it’s getting more and more difficult to keep hackers out. Like most criminals, they look for the easiest prey. So please, don’t make it easier by inviting them in. They just come out of no where and surprise us when we least expect them. I had such a moment on Monday of this week. I had a day off from work for Lincoln’s Birthday. So, I called up a friend to ask him to play a round of golf at the course in Westchester. My buddy and I played the first two holes and as usual had a few good shots and a few not so good ones. Then “the moment” happened. I hit my tee shot on #3. I knew that I had hit it well. I knew that I took into account the strong wind blowing from left to right. We watched the ball bounce in front of the green and roll up towards the pin. I said “go in” and for the first time in my 47 years of playing golf the ball did go in for an “ace”. For that one moment, for that one shot, I was just as good as the professionals. I was as good as a golfer can be. Making a one on a hole is the lowest score you can have. All of the forces had come together to have my little white ball go 178 yards in the air and roll into a tiny little hole on the green. Was it luck?, yes. Did it require some skill?, most definitely. All I know is that “moment” will be forever etched into my memory bank. After taking photos and celebrating a little, it was on to the next hole. As usual, I hit some good and some bad shots. In golf you are only as good as your last shot. No matter how many bad shots I make in the future, I know that for one swing, for one shot, for one moment, my golf game was perfect. It was time to have a cold one and celebrate! Hawthorne, not Torrance In a recent newspaper story, a reporter indicated that SpaceX was located in Torrance. I could not believe that she had made the mistake of taking away our “pride and joy” and giving it to our neighbors to the South of us. This world class, trend setting, cutting edge corporation is located in HAWTHORNE, not in boring, old Torrance or “cool” Manhattan Beach. Several companies advertise that they are in “the South Bay”, or near MB, but in actuality they are located in Hawthorne. SpaceX has no need to lie about where they are located. They are proud of operating where Jack Northrop started to develop his “flying wing” right there at the Hawthorne Airport. What other city around here can claim a line up that includes Northrop, Mattel, the Beach Boys, Jim Thorpe and Marilyn Monroe getting their starts here? SpaceX is from Hawthorne. We are from Hawthorne and we can be proud to be residents in the City of Good Neighbors. Don’t let some reporter from the Daily Breeze tell you differently, we are “changing the world” right here in Hawthorne. Let Torrance build helicopters at their airport, we build space rockets! Pancak es and More The Hawthorne Hometown Pancake Breakfast will be held on Saturday, February 28 from 8 a.m. to 12 noon at the Hawthorne Museum. If you have not been to a big breakfast recently, then plan to join us for some great hot cakes, bacon, sausage, orange juice and coffee. Food tastes better outside in the fresh air. There will be an auction, raffle and music. We’re planning on over 200 people, but the numbers may be greater than that since the word is just getting out. Some of the proceeds from the event will go to the marching band of Hawthorne High School for their uniform fund. The cost is $5 for adults, with children under 5 free. The Historical Society will have the museum open and there will be plenty of good neighbors to talk with that day. Come hungry, leave happy. State of the City Luncheon The Hawthorne Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the annual State of the City Luncheon this year on Friday, March 13 starting with registration at 11:30 a.m. Mayor Brown will give us an update as to all the exciting things going on in Hawthorne. Tickets are $50 per person, with company tables available. Please contact the Chamber for more information. Historica l Society Meeting The next meeting of the Hawthorne Historical Society will be held on Monday, February 23 at 6:30 p.m. Mr. Jim Osborne will be our guest speaker. He will be speaking on the development of Bodger Park. He has some neat displays that he will be showing also. It looks like another neat evening program for those interested in learning some of the history of Hawthorne. Refreshments will be served. Bring a friend and join us. • “For it was not into my ear you whispered, but into my heart. it was not my lips you kissed, but my soul. - judy garland
