Hawthorne Happenings
News for the City of Good
Neighbors from an Old Guy
Named Norb Huber
Is This For Real?
I really don’t make this stuff up. Things
that I report here in this rambling column
are pretty much factual, okay, maybe a
little fabrication of a story or two takes place
once an awhile. I don’t report fake news. So,
here is another personal experience that I could
not have dreamt up. God only knows why strange
things happened to me, maybe so I have
something to write about. Here we go: As
you all know, I am moving my nativity business
up here to NorCal. Last Friday, I rented
a U-Haul truck and hired three young men to
pick up and set up large pallet racks in my
warehouse. Everything went well, so when we
were finished, I told them to stop at the local
hamburger joint and I would treat them to lunch.
They were great kids and they thanked me for
the hire as they headed towards their car. I
climbed back up into the rental truck, and closed
the door just as a younger looking man with a
jacket on tapped on my driver’s side window. He
asked me to step out of the vehicle and he opened
up his jacket to reveal his SWAT attire.
He informed me that they had received
a report that an older gentleman was
seen running drugs out of a close by
warehouse. After searching my empty
truck and running my ID, I was good to
go. I guess I have a clean record. They
looked at my address in Hawthorne on
my driver’s license and asked me what type of
city Hawthorne was. They had never heard of
the City of Good Neighbors. Being the former
City Clerk, I told them some of the great things
about Hawthorne. They didn’t seem overly
impressed with either the city or the fact that
I was the former City Clerk. I found out later
that my hires were stopped and their car was
searched also. My dear brother-in-law now
calls me the “Mule”. A recent movie staring
Clint Eastwood depicts an old white guy
running drugs for the Mexican Cartel. On my
way back to the truck rental yard, I thought I
to myself that should have offered the officers
a cold one or a free nativity or maybe both.

All Lennox Schools Recognized as
AVID Certified Sites
The Lennox School District has successfully
implemented AVID district-wide to help prepare
students for college and career. Dr. Sandy
Husk, CEO of AVID, recently recognized
and honored all elementary sites as AVID
Elementary Certified Sites for the 2018-2019
school year in a letter to the schools. This
status is awarded to sites that have met AVID’s
implementation expectations and submitted
required data documentation that supports
program effectiveness and student progress.
“We applaud you for your diligence in attaining
this achievement, and we look forward
to your continued leadership in providing
quality education for all,” said Dr. Husk.
Lennox Middle School is also a certified
site entering its fifth year of implementation
of the AVID program, while all elementary
