in the inning, Romero was hit by a pitch to
force in a run. A balk brought home the fifth
run of the inning and a 6-4 lead.
Burner came in to silence the Chiefs over
the final two innings and the Eagles advanced

Softball: Eagles Hold
on for 8-5 Win
The Eagles faced a young Segerstrom
Jaguar team in the first round of the CIF-SS
Division 4 playoffs. The upstart Jaguars, who
have just two seniors on the roster, gave El
Segundo all it could handle but the Eagles
held them off with an 8-5 win.
Trailing 1-0 in the first inning, the Eagles
scored five runs highlighted by back-to-back
triples from Kaili Reitano and Laila Phillips.
The Jaguars responded in the second inning
by scoring two runs -- one on an RBI single
by Aidee Mendoza and the other due to a
bases-loaded catcher’s interference call. In
the fourth inning, the Jaguars crept closer
on an RBI double by Alexandra Molina to
make it 5-4.
El Segundo came up with a run in the
fourth inning when Kaila Little tripled to lead
off the inning and scored on a long fly ball
by Katie Croxall. In the fifth inning, Sophia
Marrero reached on an error and Reitano
singled. Both had courtesy runners inserted
and Leah Abitante and Kelly Carignan each
wound up scoring to give the Eagles an
8-4 lead. Segerstrom would score once in
the seventh inning to make it close, but the
Eagles held on for the 8-5 win.
El Segundo 23-6 and ranked fifth, played
host to Dos Pueblos (Goleta) 19-6 on Tuesday.
The winner would play in the quarterfinals
today at a site TBA.
Boys Volleyball Season
Ends in Second Round
For the eighth consecutive season, the
Eagles advanced to the CIF-SS playoffs. The
Eagles, who have two CIF championships to
their credit, defeated Bishop Montgomery
25-13, 22-25, 25-22, 25-15 in the opening
round of the CIF Southern Section Division
2 playoffs.

inning that led to the Eagles’ 6-4 triumph.
The play of Robby Pedersen, Mike Lynch
and Nakoa Parrish up front dominated the
front line. Kainalu Kekekia and Ethan Frank
blasted away at the net while Casey Lund
helped lead the team in digs.
The relatively easy win rewarded the Eagles
with a match with Beckman (Irvine), the 24th
ranked squad in the nation and the secondseeded
team. It was the classic David versus
Goliath matchup. The Eagles did what they
could, but fell in three games 10-25, 18-25
20-25. The Patriots haven’t lost a game in
eight straight matches and have a string of
25 games going.
The Patriots are a big, physical team that
pounds the ball at the net. Though Pedersen
and Parrish held their own, the Patriots had
just too much for El Segundo. Still the
Eagles took on Goliath with a sense of
pride and extended long rallies with digs
by Lund and Logan Sharp. In game three,
Pedersen and had three blocks for points while
Parrish had two more. It rattled the Patriots,
who gathered themselves and finished off
the Eagles.

Allison won the 100-yard backstroke and

finished sixth. The boys team of Inoki, Allison,
Schodorf and Davis finished second in the
200-yard freestyle relay and third in the 400-
yard relay. The boys team finished fourth
overall out of 32 teams -- a mere two points
less than third place Walnut High School.
Dylan Chen placed fourth in the girls 50
freestyle and seventh in the 100 freestyle,

while Gabriela Crother-Collado finished
seventh in the 500-yard freestyle. The team
of Chen, Crother-Collado, Avery Torres
and Victoria Rodriguez placed first in the
consolation race of the 200-yard freestyle
relay. Chen, Crother-Collado, Christina
Mullane and Christina Grenke competed in
the 400-yard freestyle.
