EL SEGUNDO HERALD December 30, 2021 Page 9
Residents Reflect from front page
Overwhelmingly, the people of El Segundo
were thankful for each other.
Minutillo thanks her family and friends for
helping her on her writing journey, while another
resident thanks his therapist and the existence
of Zoom therapy in general. Thanks went to
ESPD, to spouses and partners for their love
and support, and neighbors for their care and
understanding.
Vorhis thanks her downstairs neighbors, saying
they are “literally the best neighbors even
through plumbing challenges and live music
above their living room. They are super punk
rock and compassionate.”
Though it’s clear that this year was both
rocky and stagnant for everyone, wishes for
the new year poured in with excitement and
hope. “I hope that people remember to be kind
to one and other and to treat each other with
compassion. I am looking forward to a new
year with lots of love and good health for our
little Mayberry,” says Harrington. Hopes for
financial stability, health, and travel opportunities
are optimistically but humbly being whispered
into the universe.
“Next year,” says Storm, “I’m looking forward
to more dancing– swing dancing and
ballroom dancing. And of course, better health
for everyone in our city, our country, and the
world. I pray for peace!”
For myself, a writer at the El Segundo Herald,
I have had the distinct honor of getting
to meet so many incredible neighbors, all of
whom told me a story that was unlike anything
I’d ever heard. This year, the stories I heard
were ones of immense resilience, strength,
and perseverance. My hope for the new year
is that you continue to adapt and inspire each
other to keep making our city a more beautiful
place to be. •
also mourned the loss of family, friends, homes
(Ron Brown describes losing his apartment of
33 years after the building was sold), businesses
(a lot of love went to Brewport), and more.
But as quickly as tragedy struck, El Segundo
responded as a community to stand strong. “El
Segundo responded with flexibility and helped
Main Street businesses and restaurants survive
with extending outdoor dining,” says resident
Bill Klages. Though there were many things to
mourn this past year, residents also share their
bright spots, wins, and celebrations.
AJ Pulver says his favorite thing that happened
in the city this year was the birth of his
daughter, Savannah Mae. Conversely, he says
the most difficult part of his year was the birth
of his daughter, Savannah Mae.
Another neighbor says that he moved to
El Segundo this year and was blown away by
the Fourth of July events. All of the events
that made it back this year were praised
in every way, shape, and form, from the
a beautiful place to live, and those who live
there are quick to say the same.
After the death of her husband, Storm reflects
on brighter days.
“I’m proud to say I was able to pull up my
granny pants and strap on some positive gumption
wherever I could find it,” she says. Going for
walks, enjoying the ocean air, and the bike path
helped her heal. More than that, she says that
the best thing that happened this year was being
able to dance again. “My husband and I loved to
dance, and I missed it greatly,” she says. So, when
swing dancing classes were brought back to El
Segundo, she was able to feel the excitement
she used to feel dancing with her husband.
Painting Tower 60 pink for breast cancer awareness
month, a cookbook that led to community,
and the El Segundo Mom Swap were among
the highlights described by people all over the
city. New love, new pets, new living arrangements,
and many fresh starts were reported as
exciting events of the year.
AJ Pulver celebrated the birth of his daughter in 2021.
Richmond Street Fair to the Holiday Bazaar
at the Woman’s Club. Residents are grateful
for the return of events and social connection.
These little moments of community, happiness,
success… they’re what makes El Segundo such

and gives August an assignment. August is sent
to a boarding school in Harker’s territory, to
keep watch on his daughter Kate in the event
of the truce breaking. However, when Kate
learns August’s true identity, she attempts to
capture him, and the pair must flee for their
lives from monsters hunting them.
This Savage Song is one of those books that
isn’t exactly “good,” but you still can’t put it
down. The setup with monsters is really cool,
and the story is essentially Romeo and Juliet
without the romance.
More stories for HS Teens can be found in
the reopened El Segundo High School Library.
ESHS students can stop by and check out the
space and collection during newly extended
hours Monday-Friday. •
