2019, through 3 a.m., Sunday, Jan. 20. The

Raytheon Designs Special Prosthetic
Hand for Teen Musician
Two weeks ago, Raytheon celebrated the end
of its Toys for Tots Toy drive. The company’s
employees, across five different sites, donated
over 4,000 toys to the Marine Corp’s Toys for
Tots organization. In El Segundo alone, more
than 2,700 toys were collected. Keeping with
the spirit of giving, Raytheon employees teamed
up with high school students in El Segundo
as well as in McKinney, Texas to design a
prosthetic hand for a 13-year-old boy who
is learning to play the mellophone. His prosthetic
hand was making it difficult to hold the
instrument, so the best and the brightest minds
at Raytheon’s Space and Airborne Systems office
volunteered over 90 hours of their time to
help fulfil his goal of performing in his school’s
marching band. With help from a group of Da
Vinci Science High School students, Raytheon
engineers made him a new 3D-printed prosthetic
hand designed to grip objects more easily.
Texas Scottish Rite Hospital will do the final
testing and fitting once Raytheon 3D prints
the final design.

Fire Department
Stays Ahead of the Pack
Members of the El Segundo Fire Department
completing their annual qualification
to maintain their REMS (Rapid Extraction
Module Support) certification. This consists
of a “pack test” which is three miles on a
track with 45-pound packs on their back,
completed in under 45 minutes. When
successful, along with a long list of other
qualifications, they are certified to be deployed
throughout the state to provide support and
extrication of firefighters who are injured in
the line of duty while fighting wildland fires
on the fire line.

In the Dec. 20 City Council article, it
was incorrectly reported that the individual
