score. Hardy led all scorers with 15 points,
while George Domyan had 11 points. March
said his team’s effort was encouraging and
added, “This was a great experience for us
and will only make us better.”
The Eagles travel to Verbum Dei on Saturday
and won’t play their next home game
until Saturday, Dec. 21, when they host Sunny
Hills at 7 p.m.
Lady Eagles Finish Strong
in Redondo Tournament
Head coach John Peterson has been stressing
defense and looking for open opportunities
on offense from the very start. His team has
responded in a big way in their first tournament
of the season by overwhelming Marquez
(Huntington Park) 59-13 and Bishop Conty-
Loretto 58-18 in the first two rounds. They
fell to City Section power Legacy 45-42 in a
game that saw seven lead changes early on.
Mounting mistakes in the second half and
down the stretch doomed the Eagles when
they needed a stop or a score.
The loss to Legacy was a stinging reminder
that mistakes against good teams will come
back to haunt them. El Segundo faced Narbonne
in the third place game and after a poor
shooting first quarter, went on to a 43-36 win.
El Segundo’s defense forced eight turnovers
in the first quarter and allowed just one field
goal, but trailed by two points. In the second
quarter, the Eagles continued their relentless
full-court pressure defense that caused Narbonne
into committing more turnovers. Leila
Sugimoto’s layup and free throw allowed her
team to tie the game. Jordan Peterson helped
account for her team’s last seven points of the
second quarter. She made the first three-pointer,
after 11 team attempts, and then had a layup
on the next possession. With 1:52 remaining
in the half, Peterson found Reese Jones for a
wide-open jumper to tie the game.
Hannah Chang’s three-pointer gave her
team a lead to start the second half and Reese
Jones’ floater gave the Eagles a three-point
lead. Nicole Ungaro’s layup tied the game and
then Peterson connected on back-to-back threepointers
to give El Segundo a lead it wouldn’t
surrender. Christina Tsukahira connected from
long range late in the third quarter during
which the Eagles scored 21 points and led
by 12 entering the fourth quarter. El Segundo
would hold off Narbonne for its fifth win of
the season. Peterson, who had 12 points, was
named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Eagles played at Chadwick last night and
host Morningside Friday night at 6 p.m. and
Bishop Conaty-Loretto on Monday at 7 p.m.
Soccer Teams Begin Play
The boys soccer team’s success has caught
the eye of the CIF Southern Section. The
Eagles’ back-to-back CIF championships
have earned them a right to play at the big
table in Division 1. Head coach Andrew Kelly
believes his team can compete at that level
with the players he has returning. The season
kicked off with games this week against Millikan,
West Torrance and Palos Verdes. They
host South Torrance next Friday, Dec. 13 at
6 p.m. and Golden Valley on Saturday, Dec.
14 at 11 a.m.
The girls soccer team started their season
this week playing some of the South Bay’s top
teams -- West Torrance on the road, Peninsula
Friday at home at 3 p.m., and San Pedro and
Wiseburn next week on the road. •
Jordan Peterson sets up for one of her trio of three-pointers against Narbonne. She was named to the All-Tournament team. Dylan Bucher’s defense interrupts Cabrillo’s Kevin Brim on offense.
George Domyan hits a jumper. CJ Hardy splits Cabrillo’s defense for a layup.
