cross here and there at joint training exercises
throughout the county. Often, we would be
the only two women amongst hundreds of
men at these training exercises. We began to
exchange ideas and stories and would lean
on each other for support. “
“In March of 2018,” Hollis said, “we
were both invited to the ARISE (A Reason
to Include and Support Everyone) Summit
hosted by the LA County Fire Department
addressing gender bias and discrimination
in the fire service. We realized that so many
women were experiencing cultural issues,
social isolation, unequal training and mentorship
opportunities, and even inadequate
facilities that were causing them to be less
successful than they could be. We realized
that the women needed to come together and
make a change, which eventually gave birth
to The Women’s Fire Alliance. The Mission
of the WFA is to support and empower
women in all aspects of the fire service by
promoting an equitable work environment.
As we were accomplishing the work of the
WFA, Deena was also studying for Battalion
Chief. So driven, so smart, she lived
and breathed leadership training, department
policy, incident command systems, and more.
She had studied and planned for so many
emergency scenarios that she was having
dreams of tsunamis and farfetched mass
casualty incidents that she would command
all night long in her sleep. Well, that is how
you come out number one on the Battalion
Chiefs examination! Now women have an
example of fire department leadership in the
South Bay, and the Women’s Fire Alliance
is one step closer to promoting an equitable
work environment for all.”
“Deena is the Vice President of the WFA; I
am the Treasurer, continued Hollis. “We work
together with our LA City Fire Department
and LA County Fire Department Board of
Directors to find ways to dramatically improve
recruitment, retention, and promotion
of women firefighters through advocacy,
mentoring, and training, thereby ensuring
critical mass representation is achieved at
all levels of fire service. Our current project
includes securing funds for consulting
services of a subject matter expert to study
and assess the needs of female firefighters
in the Los Angeles region, propose an optimal
organizational structure for our 501c3,
identify viable and continuous funding
sources to ensure long-term sustainability,
and evaluate the feasibility of establishing a
regional resource and training facility that can
support the specific needs of the WFA with
the ultimate goal of increasing the number
of women in fire service.”
You can certainly learn a lot about a person’s
character and accomplishments by listening
to and reading thoughts from those in that
person’s inner circle, right?
Lee, who grew up in La Mirada and
attended high school in Whittier, said she
had her interest in following a career in
fire science that was piqued while she was
attending Long Beach City College, contemplating
a career pathway in nursing.
While working at Long Beach Memorial
Hospital, she had multiple interactions with
paramedics, who would bring patients to
the hospital. She was urged to “try the fire
department” by colleagues who took note
of her skill set.
She then went on ten or so ride-a-longs
with local fire department personnel, and
her ride-along buddies noticed that Lee had
an obvious affinity for their work. One told
her, “Deena, you are glowing; this is your
calling.” Lee switched her major to fire
science, and scored a job with the ESFD
in 2003, and has been a rising star in the
department ever since.
Lee lives in Santa Clarita, and when she is
not on-the-job, enjoys hanging out with her
dogs, snowboarding in Mammoth, peddling
her Peloton, and, when the weather warmsup,
taking advantage of the charms that the
Pacific Ocean and adjacent sand offers.
So now that Lee has become the first
female battalion chief in the South Bay,
what is next on her upward job spiral, she
was asked? Maybe fire chief? Lee chuckled,
politely parrying that inquiry away, branding
it a “trick question.” She said that she
is “open to the possibility” but noted she
probably needs “a little more time, a little
more mentoring.”
If the past is prologue, do not bet against
battalion chief Lee breaking through another
fire department glass ceiling. •
