(19:10) were the top two finishers for the Eagles.
Their times now rank them second and third
respectfully for times by an Eagle at the CIF
finals. Iliana Montenegro (19:27) and Yuvia
Bernauer (19:35) finished impressive and are
now also ranked fifth and seventh respectfully
in school history at Mt SAC. Montenegro’s
effort also gives her the third all-time fastest
as a sophomore and Bernauer’s time was the
second all-time fastest for an El Segundo
freshman. Junior standout Katy Durand finished
the scoring with another impressive race
in (20:16). Erin Rifkin (20:50) and Makaela
Fujimoto (20:56) round out the top seven
Eagles. The Lady Eagles return four of their
top seven runners next year and are expected
to avenge missing out on a trip to the State
meet this year.
The Eagles sent just one runner to the CIF
State meet. Luca Romero (junior) finished his
CIF State race in amazing fashion with a 28th
place finish. He finished in (16:07.3), placing
him third all-time in the program’s history just
behind legendary Eagles, Gavin Glynn (15:28)
and Arend Verfailie (16:07.2). Luca holds the
fastest junior times at Woodward Park and
Mt SAC. and the school record at Columbia
Park. He will return next year with a goal of
moving up on the Eagle distance records books
for cross country and track.
Basketball Teams
Fall in Tournaments
The boys’ and girls’ basketball teams each
competed in their first tournaments of the
season. The boys won their first two games
but fell in their final two games to finish 2-2
in the Da-Vinci Tournament. The girls were
in the Redondo Tournament and finished with
four losses.
In the Da-Vinci Tournament opener, the Eagles
scored an easy 52-37 win over the Hawthorne
Math and Science Academy and had their way
with Pacific Christian in a 49-36 win. Facing
Palm Desert in the final game of pool play
represented more of a challenge and wound up
losing a close one, 60-57. The Eagles opened
the game with an 8-0 run when Holden Coulter
hit a three-pointer. The Aztecs went on a 17-0
run to finish out the first quarter.
In the second quarter, El Segundo fell behind
by as many as eight points before the Eagles
mounted a comeback. Two three-pointers by
Jesse Gutierrez and one by Jackson Pintens at
the buzzer tied the game at 29-29. In the third
quarter, Gutierrez continued his hot outside
shooting with consecutive three-pointers giving
the Eagles a six-point lead. But Palm Desert
countered with some heady plays and shooting,

resulting in a nine-point lead heading into the
fourth quarter.
The Eagles put up a valiant effort behind
Preston Engle, who scored 13 of his team’s
15 fourth-quarter points. His three-pointer, at
the buzzer to tie the game, rimmed out, and
the Eagles fell 60-57.
El Segundo faced Da-Vinci in the tournament
third-place game and couldn’t find the
rhythm and fell 52-47. Nolan Kelly’s basket
near the end of the first quarter gave the Eagles
a 12-10 lead but trailed at halftime 25-22. El
Segundo took their last lead of the game early
in the third quarter when Engle connected on
consecutive three-pointers for a 28-25 lead.
In the fourth quarter, the Eagles trailed by
as many as 12 points with 4:23 remaining.
Dayveon Marino hit a jumper, and Farren Affel
connected to make it 49-42 with time winding
down. Da-Vinci’s Ayman Sulman iced the game
with a free throw, and only a buzzer-beating
three-pointer by Jackson Pintens made it a
respectable 52-47 score.
The Lady Eagles played in the tough Redondo
Tournament and faced Pioneer League favorite
North Torrance, Rolling Hills Prep, Fairmont
Prep and Leuzinger. With a team challenged
with any height, they were forced to rely on
the perimeter shooting. In each game, mounting
turnovers, being outrebounded, and poor shot
selections doomed their outcome.
