Eagles from page 5
So for the first time in school history, both
the boys’ and girls’ teams advanced to the CIF
State Cross Country Championship. While this
is uncharted territory for the Eagles, this is the
fourth trip for the Lady Eagles and their second
consecutive trip to Fresno for the state meet.
The Eagles competed against 22 other
schools from as far away as Coronado High
School from the south and Half Moon Bay
High School to the north. In all, 195 runners
competed and the Eagles finished a respectable
ninth as a team getting edged out by Orange
County power Serra High. Garrett Rifkin led
the Eagles with a 16:47, while Noah Fenton
and Ryan Hoerner crossed the finish line in
identical times of 17:17.8. Elliott Bijlsma,
Arend Verfaillie, Calvin Liang and Christopher
Waites all finished strong in giving the Eagles
their top 10 finish.
The Lady Eagles had a strong showing at
the state meet where they ended up finishing
in seventh place out of 23 teams from as far
away as Yreka High and Coronado High.
James Maltosz finished in 13th place with an
18:46.3 to lead her team, while Sophia Zago
and Nikki Fulcomer finished in the top 56
runners. Gabby Lee, Aiyana Verfaillie, Kate
Johnson and Kelly McNamee finished in the
same order as at the CIF Southern Section
Division Finals.
The success of the cross country program can
be traced back to head coach Marcos Bolanos.
In his sixth season at the helm, he has now
taken five teams to the state championships.
With a number of juniors and sophomores
on each of the teams, the future looks bright
for the program.
Girls’ Basketball Gets Underway
The Lady Eagles were going through some
growing pains last season, finished 9-17 overall
and missed out of advancing to the CIF
Southern Section playoffs. It was the first
time in eight seasons the team did not make
the postseason.
This season the Lady Eagles return four
starters and seven varsity letter winners--and
they’ll add two players from the JV squad
plus three promising freshmen with club
basketball experience.
Returning point guard is junior Malia Hui,
who led the team in scoring at 9.6 points
per game. Hui connected on 58 three-point
field goals--eight of which came in one game
against Ribet Academy. Also returning are
senior forward Makaela Bordieri (5.5 points,
6.3 rebounds per game, 41 steals), junior
guard Kailea Lee (5.4 ppg) and sophomores
Hannah Chang (6.1 ppg) and forward Reese
Jones (3.6 ppg, 6.6 rpg, 21 blocks). The Eagles
also return junior Kayla Smith-Petty (4.3 ppg,
2.6 rpg) and senior Alliya Nomura (1.3 rpg).
The Lady Eagles add two players off the JV
squad. El Segundo captured the Ocean League
JV title and junior Remicia Germeille and
sophomore Jordyn Marconet were the leaders.
Three freshmen with significant club basketball
experience join the team, including Storey
Noble, Jordan Peterson and Kristen Tsubaki.
The Lady Eagles opened the season on the
road after Thanksgiving at the Downey High
School Tournament. They fell to South Torrance
43-35 in the first round. It was a game
they might have won had their defense kept up
their relentless effort, especially after the first
quarter. The Lady Eagles shut out the Spartans
in the first quarter, but South outscored El
Segundo in the second quarter 17-5 and took
a halftime 17-14 lead. With the score close
entering the fourth quarter, South took over
the game and outscored the Lady Eagles 18-8.
Malia Hui and Reese Jones each had eight
points to lead El Segundo. Jones looks to be
the power forward that the team will need this
season. She led the team with 18 rebounds.
In the second round, El Segundo overwhelmed
Bell 52-28. Head coach Randy
Kiehm played his entire roster, giving each
player early season experience playing time.
“It’s important to see who can do what and
they played well,” he said.
Hannah Chang had perhaps her best game
of her career. She scored a game-high 19
points, including a perfect five for five from
three-point range. Jones led both teams with 15
total rebounds, including 10 on the defensive
end. First-year player Jordan Peterson showed
what she’s capable of doing by hauling in 10
rebounds.
El Segundo played its third round game
yesterday and will wrap up the first tournament
of the season today at Downey High
School. The Lady Eagles will play in two
other local tournaments. The Valley Christian
Tournament starts December 11 and Garden
Grove starts December 27.
You’ll be able to get a look at this year’s
squad when it plays its only home game before
the end of the year on December 6, 2017 at
6 p.m. against Palos Verdes. •
