To the extent that your parents are a bit clueless,
are you able to give them a bit of a break?
(The pandemic may be making it worse. Communication
is harder, and parents have differing
views and circumstances regarding safety.)
But wait: they should give you a break too.
You are right: they certainly cannot understand
what it’s like to be you and to feel the pressure
you feel. They haven’t been your age at
this time. They cannot feel it like you do. I
also suspect that you have begun to see that
your parents - like all people - are far from
perfect, and maybe even hypocritical about
some things, and yet they still have power
over you for several years… and that stinks. I
would love to tell you to just hang in there and
that things will get better as you get older, but
I know that that feels like forever from now.
So what do you do? It sounds like you have
given your parents good reason to trust you.
If that’s the case, then you both have
an assignment: have a conversation about uncertainty
and not knowing and trust. Determine
how far each of you is willing to trust one
another, even when you don’t understand
where the other is coming from. This is a hard
conversation and you may benefit from the help
of a counselor or a trusted friend, but once you
are clear about how much faith you have in
each other, you may see change start to happen.
Stay in touch and let me know how it goes.
