267 kills. Alyssa Pearson hit .313 with 133
kills; and Kylee Glickman, a defensive
specialist, recorded 230 digs last season.
Kurke and Pearson were named to the All-
CIF first team and Glickman to the second
team last season.
Returning players Anna Allen (senior) and
Malia Hui (junior) will look to help fill the
void at the setter position with the graduation
of two-year starter Julia Hoffman. Also
rounding out the list is Michelle Dell (junior).
Dell was called on early in the season as a
sophomore and excelled with 87 digs. She
earned Most Improved Player honors at the
end of the season.
Newcomers include a bevy of players moved
up from the JV team including Katie Latta,
Leslie Melgosa and Kassy McFadden. The
Eagles added 5’-10” transfer Adriana Hebert
from St. Monica High School to the middle.
Hebert has a sit-out period due to CIF transfer
rules, but is expected back before Ocean
League play.
The Lady Eagles started their season on
a positive note. They defeated Vistamar in
the opener 25-27, 25-18, 25-18, 26-24 to
avenge last year’s opening season loss to
the Vikings. El Segundo swept Wiseburn-
Da Vinci 25-9, 25-11, 25-8 in the second
match of the season. Consecutive losses to
Bay League favorite Palos Verdes and thirdranked
Brentwood dropped the Lady Eagles
to 2-2 overall to start the season.
On Tuesday, the Lady Eagles hosted Notre
Dame Academy and today they’ll host the
Torrance Tartars at 3:15 p.m. Saturday, they’ll
play in the Valley Christian Tournament
before hosting Culver City in the Ocean
League opener next Wednesday, September
20 at 3:15 p.m. •

The Eagles had great field position after
an Oak Park punt. El Segundo took over
on Oak Park’s 44-yard line. Romero found
Bonney in stride for a 44-yard touchdown
pass and a 28-3 lead with less than a minute
remaining in the third quarter.
El Segundo’s final possession that led
to a score started deep on its side of the
field. Starting from the eight-yard line,
Romero directed a nine-play drive helped
along by a couple of penalties. Romero
ran for nine yards and Freeman picked up
a combined 50 yards on three consecutive
running plays, including rambling for 38
yards on one play. With 7:15 left, Romero
lofted a pass to Danny McEntee on a 14-yard
touchdown pass for a 35-3 lead and the final
score of the game.
Matt Romero was involved in four of the
Eagles’ five touchdowns. He threw for 151
yards and four TDs. Kyle Freeman ended
with 89 rushing yards and two touchdown
receptions, and Danny McEntee rushed nine
times for 50 yards and a touchdown.
The Eagles (2-0) host Mira Costa (0-2)
Friday night at 7 p.m. This looks to be an
exciting game and one both teams have had
circled on their calendars for a year. Last
season the Eagles upset Mira Costa, so the
Mustangs will be looking to avenge the first
loss to the Eagles in over 20 years. The
Eagles will look to prove that last season
was no fluke.

Tournament, winning all four games. In the
first round, the Eagles defeated Division 3
powerhouse Malibu 11-9. Owen Hale led El
Segundo with seven goals, while Kyle Christ
chipped in two goals. In the second game,
the Eagles defeated Buena 15-6 to advance
to the winner’s bracket on Saturday.
In the first game on Saturday against Oxnard
High, the Eagles were missing three starters
due to the SAT testing. Playing shorthanded
with underclassmen, El Segundo still pulled
out an 11-3 victory. Freshmen Mason Jaeger,
Brian Schodorf and Jaden Van Derwoude all
contributed to the victory.
In the semifinals, the Eagles played a
physical game against Westlake High and
ended up winning 7-4. Crist led the team on
both offense and defense. Towards the end
of the contest, a Westlake player’s emotions
got to him and threw a haymaker at Crist
that missed. Instead of reacting, Crist put
his head down and played through it. The
officials disqualified the Westlake player
and Crist scored on the power play. Caden
Kastigar made 12 saves defending the cage.
In the championship game, Owen Hale led
the way with four goals en route to a 10-6
victory over Rio Mesa. With a large crowd
on hand at Cal Lutheran College, the Eagles
displayed the type of play they’ll need to
compete for an Ocean League title. Kyle
Crist contributed three goals, Mason Jaeger
had a goal from the center position, and
sophomore sensation Kalan Smith scored
from the outside. •
