on the trail of Silvina Vilcapampa, believed to
be an eco-terrorist with ties to those involved
in illicit biotechnology and drugs, among
other rumored activities. ‘How does Silvina
know ME?’ puzzles Jane as she continues her
investigation into the myriad tentacles of the
Vilcapampa empire. Jane becomes obsessed
with Silvina’s life, ignoring her own tenuous
connections to her job, co-workers, even her
husband and daughter.
I chose to listen to the library’s book on
CD and voice actor Lisa Flanagan seems to
inhabit the lead character of Jane: her speech
is tumbling out, faster and faster – then, at
particular times she is slow and careful when
thinking things through. There does seem to
be an intention to give an homage to the noir
thriller when Jane’s voice is a rushed monotone,
reminiscent of a 1940s film detective.
The action is intense and sometimes difficult
to follow while listening, but I consulted our
print copy to double-check some of the nuance
here and there. There is definitely a rollercoaster
quality to this tale!
Jeff VanderMeer previously authored the
bestseller Annihilation, which was made into a
film in 2018 starring Natalie Portman. Called
“the weird Thoreau” by The New Yorker,
VanderMeer frequently speaks about issues
related to climate change and storytelling.
He is passionate about native gardening and
returning balance to our ecosytems. He and
his wife have removed nearly all of the invasive
species on their property and now boast a
resulting abundance of biodiversity: over 90
bird species have been seen in their yard along
with dozens and dozens of bee, wasp, butterfly,
and moth species.

touchdown and cut El Segundo’s lead to 29-19.
The teams traded possessions before the
Eagles went on a long extended drive. It was
dogged by penalties and a sack giving the ball
back to Westchester late in the fourth quarter.
Taking advantage of El Segundo’s penalties, the
Comets scored another touchdown to make it
close. With 1:21 left in the game Boatner connected
with Damon Coronado on a touchdown
pass and close the gap to 29-27. The ensuing
onside kick was recovered by Sam Pachuta
near midfield, and the Eagles ran out the clock
and held on for the win.
It was the first winning streak for the Eagles,
who improved to 2-0, in two seasons. Coach
Green was happy with his team’s play but
was troubled by the mounting penalties. “We
just need to slow the game down, be more
patient while continuing to be aggressive on
both sides of the ball.”
The Eagles host the Don Lugo Conquistadors
(Chino) Friday night at 7 p.m.; this will be the
two teams’ first meeting ever. The Conquistadors
are winless in their first two games, but
this proud program reached the CIF Southern
Section Division 4 finals three seasons ago.
Soph/Frosh Team Defeats
Mira Costa 34-6
The Eagles went on the road to face the
Mira Costa Mustangs and came away with a
34-6 victory. The Mustangs opened the game
with a touchdown drive and a 6-0 lead. The
Eagles would go on the score 34 unanswered
points. The first was on a long drive highlighted

by Cole Castillo’s running to the 5-yard line.
Merrick Boyles punched it in from there to
tie the game. The Eagles’ next scoring drive
came when Boyles took a toss outside and
went down the sidelines on his way to a 20-
yard touchdown and a 14-6 lead.
El Segundo’s offense continued to roll when
Elijah Coles threw a pass to Reed Abrams on a
play-action fake. Abrams got behind the corner
for the reception and went the distance for a
45-yard touchdown. The Eagles capped another
drive with Boyles rushing for a short touchdown
run and a 27-6 lead. On Mira Costa’s ensuing
possession Ryan Pilkvist delivered a punishing
tackle that caused a fumble. Boyles scooped
up the ball and ran it in from twenty yards out
for the final touchdown and the 34-6 score.
The offense shined behind Boyles’ three
rushing TDs and Cole, who was 3-for-4 for 65
yards and a touchdown pass. The defense was
full of highlights as well, led by Pilkvist, who
had two sacks and forced two fumbles. Jack
Sabosky had one of those fumble recoveries,
and Grady Lubes had an interception.
The Eagles open their home schedule Friday
at 4 p.m. against Don Lugo. •
#5 David McPherson gets to Westchester quarterback Teyon Boatner for a two-yard loss.
#26 Conrad Bernstein picks up 11 yards on this swing pass. Duke Sanders (R) was a big reason the Eagles offense thrived against Westchester.
