Eagles from page 3
get more players involved by not sacrificing
talent on one side of the ball or other. “We
have so many players that had improved
over the short period from when we stopped
playing in the spring to now. It means we’ll
have a true defense, and you won’t see many
if any players going both ways.” He says he
hopes to cut down on injuries by having two
dedicated units.
The Eagles hosted Santa Monica in a
scrimmage last night and open their season
next Friday night on the road at 7 p.m. at
Bishop Montgomery.
Football Calendar Blitz
The annual Football Calendar Blitz kicks
off tonight between 5-8 p.m. Players from the
El Segundo high school’s football team will
be going door-to-door, in their jersey tops,
selling football calendars. The calendars are
community-based businesses supported with
coupons for savings at restaurants. His is the
only fundraising event the football program supports
and has been very successful in the past.
Boys Water Polo Preview
The El Segundo Boys Water Polo team
lost six seniors to graduation that included
Jaden Van DerWoude, Brian Schodorf, Mason
Jaeger, Ryan Calvinlim, Ethan Kelch, and
Ryan Whalen. They finished their modified
two-week season, thanks to the Covid
restricted schedule, with an impressive 7-4
record. This season looks like another suc-
cessful season with the hopes of doing as
well as the 2019 team that reached the CIF
Southern Section quarter-finals.
The Eagles will be led by seniors Paxton
Fastman, Kadin McIlhargey, Eeman Motallebi,
and Nikhil Bhakta. They are also expecting
great things from last season’s second-leading
scorer and ‘Newcomer of the year’ Max
Hale. Returning in goal is sophomore Luc
Giroux, who had an outstanding season last
as a freshman.
Head coach Nila Ward is optimistic about
the upcoming season. “While we are looking
to rebuild, after graduating six seniors from
last year, we are excited for a new incoming
group of freshman to help build the program.
Defensive coordinator Mike Wagner gives instructions to Matt Higginbotham. Sophomore goalie Luc Giroux returns for the Eagles.
Many of our players are coming off of successful
summer club seasons. They represented
the Eagles at the Junior Olympics with their
respective local club teams.”
The Eagles began training this past Monday,
with two-a-day practices, at the new aquatics
center in preparation for their upcoming
season. The team is looking forward to their
first game at home on August 26 against
Glendale.
Lars Update
Since the article on Lars Nootbaar was
published last week, the rookie outfielder of
the St. Louis Cardinals was 5-for-11, including
hitting his first and second home runs and
getting his first double for the Cardinals. •
