The South Bay Aerospace Industry Alliance is a non-partisan community-based coalition of community leaders supporting the interests of the local aerospace industry, including the Los Angeles Air Force Base and the Space and Missile Systems Center (LAAFB/ SMC) located in El Segundo. The Alliance is part of the SBACC, a regional association of 17 local chambers of commerce dedicated to regional issue advocacy in the South Bay. The Alliance is composed of elected officials at all levels of government, local chambers of commerce, military veterans, business and industry representatives, nonprofit organizations, education entities, and other groups and local community leaders. “After over two years of planning, the Alliance is now a reality,” said Michael Jackson, who has spearheaded this effort for the SBACC. “The aerospace industry has been the foundation of our South Bay community for over 60 years since the first military and defense programs were created. The Alliance will serve to engage our community yearround on aerospace issues affecting jobs and the local economy,” Jackson added. “We’re here because of the Los Angeles Air Force Base and the Space and Missile Systems Center in El Segundo that creates these jobs.” The Alliance will work actively to identify ways the South Bay community can work together with local defense companies and U.S. Air Force (USAF) leaders on common issues and concerns affecting the entire Southern California area. The Alliance has already been an informal partner with the USAF “P4 Partnership” initiative with LAAFB/SMC. The Alliance welcomes the participation of individuals and organizations who believe the local aerospace industry’s presence in Southern California is essential to the South Bay economy. – Source: The Dardanelle Group Troop 762 Enjoys Successful Camp Time at Catalina The members of El Segundo Troop 762 conquered Camp Cherry Valley on Catalina Island during their trip late last month. During their week-long summer camp, the boys succeeded in various activities, including a 16-mile hike to Shark’s Cove, and the one-mile swim. Additionally two of the scouts joined the prestigious Dime Club for rifle shooting accuracy. The project’s partners include Los Angeles Trade Technical College and Los Angeles/Orange Counties Building and Construction Trades Council. Participants in the program will receive “everything they need” to begin a union construction job, according to the organizers. Jobs will be waiting for those participants who complete the courses in November. Los Angeles County is facing a severe labor shortage in construction, and the upgrades at LAX are expected to strain local construction manpower even further. “With the HireLAX program, we provide a new way for the local community to take a key role in the re-imagining of LAX, by linking workers to immediate and long-term skilled jobs, and making available the training they need to be successful,” the airport’s COO said. The ongoing LAX modernization project encompasses terminals, runways and parking facilities and includes a proposed people mover that will connect off-site parking near the 405 freeway with the nation’s second-busiest airport. Projected to last through 2023, the program is considered the largest public works project in the history of Los Angeles. It began in 2009 with the expectation it would create 121,000 construction jobs annually over the project’s 14-year span, according to the Los Angeles World Airports website. The Southern California construction business is booming with major improvements at Los Angeles International Airport expected to take years to complete and the Los Angeles Rams football stadium project in Inglewood breaking ground after a rain delay. Now, comes word the Los Angeles Clippers and their owner Steve Ballmer plan to build his team its own arena nearby in Inglewood, adding to the South Bay’s pro sports presence. The basketball arena, which Ballmer says would be built near Century Boulevard and Prairie Avenue, could seat 20,000 fans and be finished in time for the 2023 season, according to published reports. Southern California is the epicenter for the construction boom that is raising workers’ take-home pay as union and non-union tradespeople find themselves and their skills in demand again. The building boom has created a labor shortage, which the construction industry says could be alleviated by more emphasis by local school officials on career and technical training programs. Jobs at construction sites offer good salaries and require only a high school diploma or the equivalent to land them. A national building trade recently called on lawmakers and labor and education officials to address the shortage of qualified construction workers by funding and reinvigorating career and technical education programs. “It is time for elected officials to get the word out to students that construction offers high-paying jobs with upward mobility,” said Stephen E. Sandherr, chief executive officer for the Associated General Contractors of America. With more major building projects in the pipeline in the Los Angeles area, his group is worried that high school and middle school students aren’t aware of the career opportunities in carpentry, plumbing, electrical, concrete and other skilled labor for home and commercial construction jobs. The Apprentice Readiness Program at Southwest College is designed to help entry-level workers overcome barriers to employment, including lack of transportation or past troubles with the law. Other barriers to full-time employment will be addressed, such as lack of a high school diploma or GED, childcare, homelessness, and an inability to afford tools. The HireLAX Apprenticeship Readiness program will prepare a diverse group of local community members for placement into union apprenticeships, according to its organizers. Once hired, the recruits will continue to receive training both on-the-job and in the classroom, while earning prevailing wages and receiving health and retirement benefits.
