Southern Section playoffs for the seventh
consecutive season. El Segundo played host
to Bay League third place finisher Peninsula
in the first round. The Eagles came out strong
and held a 4-2 advantage after the first period.
However the Panthers would wear down the
Eagles, score eight unanswered goals and
defeat El Segundo 8-6.
Girls Volleyball Advanced
to Playoffs
The Eagles finished 6-4 in Ocean League

Jenna Olson, Christina Mullane and

Eagles finished in a tie for the top spot in
the Ocean League. The Eagles’ great season
came to a thrilling end in the CIF-SS Division
4 quarterfinals playoffs, losing 8-7 to
fifth-ranked Sunny Hills.
Cam Carlton Leads Eagle
Basketball Team
One of the most emotional games of the
school year didn’t involve a league title or
CIF championship. Never mind that Santa
Monica would defeat the Eagles by 28 points.
It didn’t matter to the Eagle faithful because
the gym was there to watch Cameron “Cam”
Carlton. Cam played in just one game in his
high school year, but it happened in front of
a standing room only crowd there to watch

and support him. Those who were there will
long remember Cam scoring a game-high 15
points, including four three-pointers. Even
the Santa Monica crowd cheered for him.
Banner Year for Lady Eagles
Basketball Team
When the Eagles defeated Santa Monica
45-29 in the finale of the Ocean League
schedule, it marked the first time in program
history that El Segundo had won a league
title in girls basketball. El Segundo advanced
to the second round of CIF-SS 3A Division
playoffs with an exciting 40-34 win over
host Irvine. The Eagles set a program record
for most wins with 21 to go along with the
first league title.
Boys Soccer Team Repeats CIF
and State Championships
The Eagles completed their second consecutive
CIF championship and for good measure
won their second consecutive Division 3
Southern California state championship. With
their historic 25th win of the season, the
Eagles cemented their achievement in school
history. El Segundo finished 25-1-1 overall,
ranked fourth in the nation and second in
California. It was the highest national rank
that any El Segundo team has reached since
the 1966-67 basketball squad was number
one in the nation.
Girls Soccer Team
Competes Well
The Eagles had a decent year finishing
with nine wins and a fourth place standing
in the competitive Ocean League. They were
a young team led by forwards freshman
Chelsea Charles and junior Chloe Brown as
well as senior goalkeeper Liliana Romero.
Boys Volleyball Finishes Second
in League
The Eagles finished second in the Ocean
League after an epic five-game loss to league
champions Santa Monica. They entered the
CIF Southern Section Division 2 playoffs
and defeated Bishop Montgomery in the
first round, but were upended by Beckman
in the second round.
A Big Year for Track and Field
The Eagles had 26 athletes who qualified
for the CIF Southern Section Division 3
prelims by placing in the top three in each
of 24 events. On the boys side, they swept
the pole vault event with Dexter Koester
breaking a 43-year-old school record of 14
feet. Sean Lee was second, Charlie Taylor
third and Sydney Chen also did well. Cross
country standout Arend Verfaillie finished
second in the 1600m, while Elijah Dunn
was stunning in the 100m.
The girls team won its first-ever Ocean
League title with great individual performances
included. The 4x100 team of Madeline Desemone,
Leilanli Cooper, Tyler Jones and Suey
Diep set a school record. Individual winners
were Gabby Lee in the 1600m, James Matlosz
(3,200 meter), Celestina Craft (high jump),
Gabby Hume (discus) and Tyler Jones (long
jump). Nikki Fulcomer won the 1,600m and
800m races.
Kyle McMullin became the first Eagle Scout in the baseball
program’s history.
A First for Girls Lacrosse
The Lady Eagles lacrosse team earned the
program’s first league title with an upset of
nationally ranked Downey on a tiebreaking
goal by Grace Bonney. Bonney recovered
the ball and scored after a blocked shot by
Morgan Wood. Seven players received allleague
honors including Wood, who was
named Offensive Player of the Year for the
second consecutive season.
The Eagles set a school record by winning their second consecutive CIF and Southern California Region titles.
Swim Teams Shines
El Segundo’s long history of competing in
the CIF swim finals continued. Nicholas Allison
won the 100-yard backstroke and placed
ninth in the 100 butterfly. William Schodorf
finished second in the 500-yard freestyle
and fourth in the 200-yard freestyle. Danny
Gonzales swam the 200-yard intermediate.
Slate Davis finished fourth in the 100-yard
freestyle while Hirota Inoki finished sixth.
The boys team of Inoki, Allison, Schodorf
and Davis finished second in the 200-yard
freestyle relay and third in the 400-yard relay.
The Eagles finished fourth overall out of 32
teams -- a mere two points out of third place
behind Walnut High School.
On the girls side Dylan Chen placed fourth
in the 50 freestyle and seventh in the 100
freestyle, while Gabriela Crother-Collado
finished seventh in the 500-yard freestyle.
The team of Chen, Crother-Collado, Avery
Torres and Victoria Rodriguez placed first
in the consolation race of the 200-yard
freestyle relay.
Baseball Team Wins Ocean Title
The Eagles had another successful season
by winning 21 games. They won their third
consecutive Ocean League title and defeated
the top=seeded team in the second round of
the CIF Southern Section Division 2 playoffs
before falling to Santa Margarita 4-0 in the
third round.
Softball Team
The Lady Eagles had one of the program’s
most successful seasons. They were
first in the Ocean League, won 25 games,
had an 18-game win streak (the longest in
the program’s history) and reached the CIF
Southern Section championship game for
the third time in 12 years. It was the sixth
time El Segundo had advanced to a softball
CIF final. Unfortunately the Eagles’ 41-year
drought since their last CIF championship
continued when they fell to second-seeded
Godinez in the final.
