Trailing 2-0 in the third inning, Kopecky
singled, and Lucas Bonham followed with a
two-run home run to tie the game. It stayed that
way until the sixth inning when Dylan Alcala
singled and was sacrificed to second base by
Brett Abitante. Nik Kvitek’s RBI single gave
El Segundo a 3-2 lead. In the seventh inning,
Kopecky led off with a single and scored on
an RBI single by Bonham.
Madera loaded the bases on three consecutive
hits in their half of the seventh, but Martinez
struck out the next three hitters to get the save.
El Segundo hit four home runs in their second
game, but Hanford (Northern California
Champion) hit three home runs, including
a walk-off three-run home run to defeat El
Segundo 8-6. Dylan Immel hit a first-inning
solo home run, Max Martinez hit a secondinning
solo home run, and Lucas Bonham
hit a solo shot to lead off the seventh inning.
Martinez’s two-run homer two batters later
gave El Segundo a 6-5 lead. Hanford would
win it in the bottom of the seventh on three
consecutive hits, including a home run that sent
El Segundo into the loser’s bracket.
El Segundo stayed alive by walloping Utah
State champion North Lone Peak 21-2. It meant
playing a double-header. They faced Madera
(Central California) in the first game and came
away with a 9-7 win.
With the win, it meant playing a doubleheader
and facing Tri-Valley, a team that had
scored 36 runs heading into their game with
El Segundo. El Segundo’s pitching staff was
no match in a devastating loss to a team that
continued their prolific scoring to advance to
the championship game.
14s Run Comes to an End
In El Segundo’s first game against Hawaii,
a five-run sixth inning cemented their 10-4
win. They got going in the first inning when
they took advantage of an error, a balk, and an
RBI double by Gavin McKinnon, and an RBI
single by Shane Huber. In the fourth inning,
RJ Puffer’s sacrifice fly made it 5-0. In the
sixth inning, El Segundo benefitted from two
errors, two walks, two run-scoring base hits,
and a sacrifice fly to score five runs. Dylan
Garcia and Owen Reed combined to hold
Hawaii to four runs on four hits, and together
they struck out nine.
El Segundo had a bye into the next round,
where they faced Taylorsville, Utah. It was
the first game of the day, with the first pitch
at 9 a.m. Neither team had much offense
going early on until the fifth inning. Mays
Borgmeyer reached on an error, Grady Lubs
singled, and both ended up scoring on an RBI
single by Mateo Heredia and a fielder’s choice
by McKinnon to give El Segundo a 2-0 lead.
In the sixth inning, El Segundo stretched
their lead to 5-0. Reed Abrams walked, and
Borgmeyer singled, and with two outs, Ethan

Ayler was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Heredia’s two-run single and McKinnon’s RBI
single provided the timely hitting. Taylorsville
scored two runs in the sixth inning and had a
short-lived one-run seventh inning rally. Ayler
came on in relief and got a ground ball and
two consecutive strikeouts to earn the save and
send his team into the winner’s bracket final.
Facing Tri-Valley would prove to be an
obstacle El Segundo couldn’t overcome in
their 12-7 loss. El Segundo took the lead in
the fifth inning, but Tri-Valley took advantage
of some costly errors and regained the lead,
and went on to win.
Getting knocked out of the winner’s bracket
meant facing Nevada (South Reno) in the loser’s
bracket final, and the winner would face Tri-
Valley in the championship game. El Segundo’s
all-star run came to an end when pitching was
thin, and South Reno took advantage and shut
out El Segundo in a lopsided win.
13s Fall after Impressive Win
El Segundo faced Yuma, Arizona, to open up
their Pacific Southwest Regional Tournament
and came away with an 11-3 win. They won
it with the help of seven walks, four Yuma
errors, and five hits. Aaron Newman started,
and Shaun Conley came in relief and held
Yuma to three runs on six hits.
In their second game, El Segundo took on
Hawaii Elite and fell 10-1. Hawaii’s good
pitching, aggressive base path running, timely
hitting, and costly errors by El Segundo led
to their win. Falling into the loser’s bracket
would mean a strain on the pitching staff.
El Segundo faced Hanford (Central California)
without their ace in their next game.
Hanford had a tough one-run loss to Hawaii
Kai in their opening game and came through
the loser’s bracket to meet El Segundo. El
Segundo’s lack of timely hitting was an issue;
they left six runners on base in scoring
position. The most glaring stat was the 15
times they struck out. Ben Lee started for El
Segundo in his first appearance on the mound
and struck out 14 batters while reaching base
three times.
