Perhaps Robbins is as divisive as he is because what he’s selling might be smoke and mirrors: is the idea of happiness an illusion? Is willing yourself to be happy delusional? Does it last beyond the six-day event? And if it works, does it really matter? As Christian Bale’s Batman says at the end of 2008’s “The Dark Knight” in response to a series of crimes that have been pinned on the caped crusader, “Sometimes,  the truth isn’t good enough. Sometimes people deserve more. Sometimes, people deserve to have their faith rewarded.” “Tony Robbins: I Am Not Your Guru” is unrated, but features strong language. 115 minutes. Now streaming on Netflix. • Community Briefs from page 2 City of El Segundo’s Certified Farmers Market Duncan from page 5 had the type of individual success that caught people’s eyes. Breaking into the league with a big afro atop his head, Bryant would slam the ball through the hoop with his tongue swaying outside of his mouth like Michael Jordan. He won the slam dunk title, a contest that LeBron James still refuses to participate in. He led the league in scoring, won championships, made unbelievable shots with what looked like eight arms in his face. Bryant scored 81 points in a game and has had five other games of 60 points or more, including his last game ever against the Utah Jazz. Some would say Duncan was boring. Bryant, though, left a footprint on the league and had a global impact that will forever tie him to the game of basketball. When it comes down to it, there really is no pure and concrete way to measure who the better player was. You can manipulate the numerical statistics to say whatever you want and give either player the upper hand. At the end of the day, however, Duncan and Kobe both led their teams to championships and played two distinctively different positions and styles of game. The Spurs had more franchise stability throughout Duncan’s career, while Kobe dealt with the loss of Jerry West, Phil Jackson coming and going as he pleased, and a different head coach every other year. Duncan, meanwhile, had Popovich. Choosing the better player between the two is completely based on opinion and conjecture only. When it comes down to it, there will never be another Kobe Bryant who prolonged the Jordan era by affecting the world with his talent and buzz that he created. His flash, drive, and determination to be the best will never again be equaled. He was a one of a kind player. Tim Duncan, with his prolonged success and ability to keep his team on top of the league for so long, may just go down in history as one of the Top10 greatest players to ever play the game. Bryant could be left out of that mix. This offseason, both Duncan and Bryant will disappear into retirement, one more quietly than the other. The two superstars have had careers that remain quite parallel to one another. The only thing that we do absolutely know for sure is that the NBA is worse off for losing them both. • The El Segundo Farmers Market is moving. Beginning July 21, the market will move to the 300 block of Main Street. The new location will give customers the opportunity to utilize the recently updated City Hall Plaza and will reduce impact to many Main Street businesses. The first date will also coincide with the El Segundo Chamber’s ArtWalk event, which takes place on Main Street and throughout El Segundo. At the Market’s new location on the 300 block of Main Street, we will continue to have around 30 vendors at the market each week; some vendor booths will be located on Main Street and some will be located within City Hall Plaza. The Farmers Market is comprised of Produce Vendors, Prepared Food Vendors, Packaged Food Vendors and Local Craft Vendors. In addition to these booths, the Market is available to community non-profit organizations to fundraise; typical non-profit organizations that have participated in the past include: ESUSD Organizations, Chamber of Commerce, Boy Scouts of America, El Segundo Youth Drama, and other local non-profit groups. • variety of different asset classes to potentially reduce risk and enhance returns. Asset classes can include: stocks and bonds of companies in different industries, sizes, regions and countries, real estate, commodities and precious metals, to name a few. While diversification does not guarantee a profit or protect against loss, positive performance of some investments may be offset by the poor performance of others. So is now a good time to invest or should you avoid jumping into the markets? “There is no way to accurately predict market fluctuations as experienced money managers can disagree about where markets are headed in the short term,” Haendiges says. “Investors should consult an investment professional about what makes sense for them. One thing we have learned, though, is that when it comes to long-term investing, time in the market trumps market timing.” • El Segundo Roty Club Presents SATURDAY, AUGUST 6, 2016 Gates Open: 4:00pm • Movie Starts at Dusk Beer • Wine • Tacos • Pizza • Hamburgers Hot Dogs • Popcorn & more! Supervisor Don Knabe County of Los Angeles |Fourth District reportedly resolved the issue and Richmond is now back on the “month per block” initial timeline. Katsouleas estimated that the 100 block should be done by the end of next week, with trees (Strawberry and King Palm) and striping shortly on the way. Meanwhile, she said that the 200 block is “moving at a rapid pace.” On another Downtown note, City Manager Greg Carpenter announced that the weekly Farmer’s Market will move from the 400 to the 300 block of Main Street starting this week. He described the change as a “pilot project” to see how things go, as well as a way to better accommodate the Art Walk event and Health Department concerns about public restrooms. As far as Council actions (Mike Dugan was absent on Tuesday), the group voted to establish the new El Segundo Technology Committee that will advise the City on technology systems. The new entity will include three to five local business/resident representatives along with two Council members who will collaborate with El Segundo Police Captain Brian Evanski and the Information Systems Manager. After advertising openings, the Council will eventually interview potential candidates and select members to four-year terms. In what was great news for the El Segundo Senior Citizen Housing Corporation Board, the Council opted to forgive the remaining $2.1 million loan balance on the Voters Trust Fund originally set up in the ‘80s as a one-time money source to construct, operate and purchase property for a senior housing project (that ultimately became Park Vista). Those dollars were actually never intended to function as a loan from the City’s general fund to Park Vista. In addition to dissolving the loan, the Council also agreed to refund the interest of $882,544 received into the general fund back to Park Vista to be applied towards reserves used for capital needs and maintenance. With this decision, the City will also no longer receive monthly payments of $13,000. Park Vista needs about $1.3 million for various improvements/repairs. City Attorney Mark Hensley said his office will continue to track legislation in Sacramento that would effectively force affordable housing projects upon cities without an approval process. Mayor Fuentes asked to agendize a future item so the Council can formally vote its disagreement with the proposed law and send the message to State legislators. During public communications, resident/ business owner Ron Swanson expressed concern about the spate of oversized vehicles taking up parking all over town—and in particular the Smoky Hollow area where he said “80% of trucks don’t belong to El Segundo businesses.” In response, Fuentes said citizens can take a survey on the City’s swebsite home page to weigh in on what actions they feel should be taken when considering street parking of oversized and recreational vehicles. Carpenter added that a report on the survey results will be ready next month to go before the Council for further direction. •
