All-Star Teams in Action
The all-star season is upon us. Each of the
El Segundo Little League teams has battled
its way through the loser’s bracket to reach
the District 36 championship game. A win
would catapult the team into the Section
Tournament starting this weekend.
Twelve-Year-Olds Eliminated
After falling into the loser’s bracket, El
Segundo Little League (ESLL) weaved its way
into the championship game against Manhattan
Beach LL. ESLL defeated the favorites 7-5
in the first championship elimination game.
It used a four-run fourth inning highlighted
by a two-run double by Hudson Winteroud
and an RBI double by Owen Reed.
In the championship game, Adler Vaughn
slammed a three-run home run in the fourth
inning to guide Manhattan Beach to a 6-2
win. Trailing 1-0 in the third inning, ESLL
tied the game when Grady Lubs walked and
later scored on Logan Brooks’ RBI single.
The other El Segundo run came in the fourth
inning when Ben Lee hit a sacrifice fly to
make it 6-2.

District Championship
El Segundo had fallen into the loser’s
bracket and battled its way back to face
Redondo Beach Little League in a pair of
championship elimination contests. They
won a nail-biter 4-3 in the first elimination
championship game. Trailing 3-2 in the sixth

inning, El Segundo’s Spencer Osborne had a
clutch two-run double on an 0-2 fastball to
give his team a 4-3 lead and eventual win.
Townes Potter started for El Segundo and
went five innings, giving up three runs on
three hits before Lincoln Quaintance threw
a perfect sixth inning to get the save.
In the championship game, El Segundo
got great pitching backed by solid defense
and two timely hits to defeat Redondo Beach
2-0. Potter gave ESLL a 1-0 lead with an
RBI single in the second inning. But it was
Osborne’s RBI single in the fifth inning that
sealed the victory. Cole Knupfer threw a
complete game six-hitter with five strikeouts.
He was helped along by two double plays
and some spectacular defense.
El Segundo opens the Little League Section
4 Tournament on Saturday at 4 p.m. against
the host, West L.A. Little League. The address
to the field is 1411 South Sepulveda
Blvd., Los Angeles.
The 10s escaped with a 3-2 victory in
their first championship elimination game. El
Segundo found itself trailing 2-1 in the fourth
inning when they tied the game on a wild
pitch. In the fifth inning, El Segundo took
advantage of an error to score the go-ahead
run. Chase Mattoon picked up the win by
throwing two scoreless innings and striking
out four.
Checking in on
Nootbaar and Palmer
Lars Nootbaar was signed to by the St.
Louis Cardinals last June. Since then, the
eighth round pick has been a standout in
the St. Louis organization. He started this
season playing for Peoria of the Midwest
League before being promoted to the Palm
Beach Cardinals of the Florida State League
(Advanced-A ball level). Nootbaar has been
promoted again and is playing for the AA
Springfield Cardinals of the Texas League.
One of the premiere summer collegiate
baseball leagues in the nation is the Cape Cod
Baseball League. Top players from around the
country play against each other to showcase
their talents for Major League scouts. Jake
Palmer, a high school All-American who
is starting for UC Irvine, is playing for the
Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox. In 11 games, Palmer
is hitting a respectable .278 while helping the
Red Sox to second place in the East Division.
