Page 8 July 6, 2017 EL SEGUNDO HERALD Baseball Roundup from page 5 two innings to close it out. The all-stars played Monday night in an elimination final. If ESLL won, it advanced to a game last night. The all-stars would need to win last night to force a championship game tonight at 5:30 p.m. at Palos Verdes Little League, Valmonte Elementary (3801 Via La Selva, Palos Verdes). 9-10 All-Stars The 9-10-year-old all-stars needed Reed Abrams to hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the top of the seventh inning and they closed out the bottom for the win over Redondo Beach Little League. El Segundo faced Manhattan Beach Little League (MBLL) in the winner’s bracket final. The host team is loaded with plenty of talent. When you add in that the head coach is a high school coach, there is a former Big Leaguer as an assistant, and Clippers star Blake Griffin is a supporter, it can be a daunting task facing the MBLL all-stars. Manhattan Beach outslugged El Segundo and won 10-0. El Segundo had its chances, but couldn’t get the timely hit. In the first inning MBLL scored four runs, highlighted by Elijah Fox’s three-run double. El Segundo attempted to cut into their four-run deficit. Ben Lee doubled and Owen Reed and Sean Mossman also reached base, but they were left stranded. In the second inning, MBLL tacked on another run on a sacrifice fly ball. El Segundo loaded the bases with two outs. Lee then hit a towering fly ball to right field that was caught. It was the last time El Segundo would threaten. Manhattan Beach’s five-run fourth El Segundo outfielder Ben Lee attempts to throw a runner out from deep centerfield inning doomed El Segundo in the four inning 10-run mercy rule game. The loss dropped ESLL into an elimination game slated for last night against either Palos Verdes or Redondo Beach. An El Segundo would mean facing MBLL tonight at Marine Field with the first pitch at 6:30 p.m. Babe Ruth All-Stars The El Segundo Babe Ruth all-star teams will be in action playing in the state tournaments.
