percent of the budget goes to “people costs,”
saying that “we are in the people business.”
Board members also were interested in receiving
more information about how the State
of California is prudently dealing with the
funding and costs of the benefits packages.
The members thanked Wilson for his work
putting together the budget package, calling
it a “great presentation.” Dr. Neil Goldman
termed the work done by Wilson as “phenomenal,”
with Board President JoAnne Kaneda
opining that the presentation was “awesome.”
Also passed Friday morning: a consultant’s
agreement with Jacqueline Jimenez to provide
the District with psychological services to
work with students at the Success Learning
Center; and the recommendation that the
District add 350 extra temporary hours to
split between instructional aides at the summer
Wiseburn Child Development Center
during their summer camps.
Prior to the Tuesday evening meeting,
Silvers, wrapping up his first year as the
superintendent, said, “I am lucky to be in
this position. We have a great staff, a great
teaching force, people who are committed, a
community that is super-driven by the right
things. They help me do the best I can for
kids.” Silvers continued, “Whatever decisions
are made, they are made in the best interests
of kids.” He added that the District has “real
good plans set up for next year.” He pointed
out that Wiseburn is striving to “provide
school sites with the best resources that we
can, but allow teaching leadership to take the
lead in professional development” to continue
top-notch collaboration practices, integration
between the schools, and to ensure that professional
development days are meaningful
to the participants. Silvers concluded, “Lots
of good things are coming.”
In other District news, school site administrators
emailed their highlights for the year,
with Juan Cabrillo Elementary Principal Lisa
Baggio noting how her school had been able
to sustain their Cognitively Guided Instruction
(CGI) mathematics practices, and that the CGI
program continues to grow. She also touted
the success of a school-wide implementation
of small reading group instruction, and the
success of Christy Lane Dance Night, Multicultural
Night, and Olympic Day -- events
that, she wrote, “helped bring together our
amazing community.”
Burnett Principal Kim Jones reported
that her campus was selected as a California
Honor Roll School for the second year in
a row; received more than $9,000 in grant
funding from the Cotsen Foundation to support
CGI math practices; had a productive
year with its onsite Teacher-On-Special-
Assignment (TOSA) leading professional
learning; and that several Burnett teachers
were trained and certified in Project Lead
the Way and Coding.
R.H. Dana Middle School Assistant Principal
Lisa Wilberg emailed that this was the
first year on the job for her and Principal
Kiana Clark. She mentioned the advent of the
new Google Portfolios of Student Growth, as
well as their students’ first place finish in the
Herndon Science Competition, the “Literacy
Rocks” school-wide scavenger hunt during
Dana Literacy Week, and the $18,000 that
the campus raised during the Pennies for
Patients campaign that benefits the Leukemia
and Lymphoma Society. “Things are always
evolving and building at Dana,” Wilberg
wrote. “And we can’t wait to see what the
2019/20 school year has in store!”
Anza Principal Alberto Paredes mentioned
that his school has a new assistant principal in
Katie Masterson, who has a master’s degree
in education from Pepperdine University. She
comes to Wiseburn from the Culver City
Unified School District, where she had spent
most of her time in a fifth grade classroom
preparing students for their transition to
middle school.
The next Wiseburn School Board meeting
is slated for July 18. Classes commence for
the 2019/20 school year on Aug. 27. •
