It’s official: the El Segundo High School’s
Class of 2019 has graduated 297 students.
Of that number, 59 students earned a GPA
of 4.0 or above. Principal of the school Dr.
Melissa Gooden addressed the senior class
and the over 3,000 family and friends of the
graduates on a perfect mild evening. She said
she was proud to announce that El Segundo
High had the best testing scores in the entire
South Bay. She applauded the senior class for
its contribution in helping the campus earn
the California Distinguished School honors.
The Class of 2019 ends 13 years of education
that most of the 297 students attended at El
Segundo schools. Throughout their formative
years, which included kindergarten through
the senior class ceremony, these students
will head into an uncertain world. They sat
with keen attention as Ben Peterson gave the
Valedictorian’s Address. Peterson’s speech
was eloquent, funny at times and to the point
while he reassured his fellow classmates that
the future was theirs.
Peterson said he was a mess during the
hours leading up to the graduation, knowing
he’d be giving a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity
speech. He sat with his father -- his mentor
-- and asked how to overcome his first public
speaking engagement. So his address started
with, “My father’s advice was to visualize my
audience sitting naked in the stands to help
ease my nerves.”
Peterson’s delivery will be long remembered
for its maturity and how he calmed his friends
by covering a broad spectrum of topics. He
Brett Kigawa completed his way through the arch bearers before
taking his seat.
Sophia Caravello can’t contain her infectious smile.
Marcellus Henry celebrated with his family.
Ben Peterson gave a memorable Valedictorian Address.
Mathew Felker is all smiles while listening to ASB President Matt
Tritasavit’s speech.

said to take control of your future and not
let hardships get you down, but to draw on
those experiences to persevere. He added
that the community of El Segundo is one big
family and that he will forever remember the
El Segundo Parents Network.
Perhaps the most entertaining speech came
from Associated Student Body President Matt
Tritasavit. Matt is a popular and accomplished
student who earned a 4.0 GPA. He is a California
Scholarship Federation Seal Bearers Lifetime
