Wiseburn Board Honors District
Employees, Remembers Scott
By Duane Plank
Superintendent Dr. Blake Silvers, completing
his first year on the job, described last
Thursday’s Wiseburn School Board session
as one of his favorite meetings of the year
because it highlights the exploits of long-time
employees. “This is the fun meeting,” he said.
“We get to look at all of our superstars in
the [Wiseburn Unified School] District. It is
nice to recognize and be thankful for the hard
work that they do. They make a big difference
in our community.” The well-attended
gathering, mostly celebratory and raucous,
also included a somber moment as the audience
recognized the sudden recent passing of
Wiseburn Watch’s Siobhan Scott.
School Board President JoAnne Kaneda
noted the death of Scott, who volunteered for
multiple Wiseburn community activities. She
conscientiously attended the group’s meetings
and held Board members accountable for their
decisions, always championing students and
Wiseburn’s best interests.
Among the District employees recognized
Thursday evening were Anza Elementary
School teachers Karen Aria (35 years of
service), Maureen Martineau (30 years), Rebecca
years) and secretary Anita Collins (25 years).
Also recognized were Dana Middle School
(DMS) teacher Candace Gray (35 years),
campus aide Theresa Rehbein (25 years), Peter
Burnett Elementary’s Dorothy Sweeney (30
years), Cabrillo Elementary’s Debra Davis (25
years), and the District Director of Human
Resources Ana Montes (30 years).
School site administrators spoke about
each of the honorees. Anza Principal Alberto
Paredes talked glowingly of his school’s
honorees, saying that all had several things
in common. “They are hard-working, dedicated
most importantly, they put students first.”
El Segundo Little League
Wraps Up Season
Story and Photos by Gregg McMullin
The El Segundo Little League wrapped up
its 65th season with Championship Saturday
that crowned the league champions in the
Double-A, Triple-A and Major divisions. The
day started with the Double-A game between
the Lake Monsters and the Thunder, continued
with the Cardinals facing the Dodgers in the
Triple-A game and ended with the Dodgers
taking on the Angels.
In each game there were fantastic defensive
plays, timely hitting and enough dramatics
to entertain the large crowds throughout the
day. I’m not sure of another community that
supports Little Leaguers on Championship
Saturday like El Segundo does. There were
special menu items at the snack bar, inflatable
jumpers for kids to enjoy, the support of
the police and fire departments and a large
contingent of fan support throughout the day.
Prior to each game, the National Anthem
was sung a cappella style by three of our
community’s finest vocalists ranging in
age from 5 to 19 years old. The biggest
fan base of the day was the Double-A game
with over 300 people in the stands and
lining the outfield fence. The large
crowd didn’t deter five-year-old Charlotte
Groendal, who not only nailed each note
but brought tears and goosebumps to an
appreciative crowd with her innocence
and perfectly sung rendition. Prior to the
Triple-A game, Rachel Penner sung our
anthem with clarity and perfect pitch in
tackling one of the most challenging songs
ever written. Not to be outdone was Zoe
Scherer, whose rendition before the Major
Division game was as beautiful as the first
two. The fact is all three are worthy of an
audition to sing at Dodger Stadium, Staples
Center or the new stadium in Inglewood. And
to think they graced us with their talents on
Championship Saturday.
