Page 6 May 28, 2015 EL SEGUNDO HERALD Eagles from page 5 went back and forth with sustained rallies, great saves and blocks. It was everything you could ask for in a championship setting. The Eagles broke through with the set tied at 13-13 and then went on a 12-3 run to finish off the fourth set. It looked like a probable fifth set or even a fourth set would have been a dream for the Eagles. Quartz Hill (24-3) took advantage of 18 unforced errors in the first two sets and attacked the net with a sense of urgency the Eagles were not ready for. But the Eagle’s incredible fortitude rallied the team through the brink of defeat to force a fifth and winner take all set. In the championship set Quartz Hills started strong but the Eagles with the momentum, from winning previous two sets, kept the game close. Matt Carter was responsible for back-to-back points to give the Eagles their first lead in the fifth set. From there on out the Eagles never trailed. Carter’s sixth kill of the day gave the Eagles a 12-10 lead. Then Moye stuffed Quartz Hill’s Jakob Dipoma before recording the final two kills of the day and sending the El Segundo fans onto the floor and into a delirious passionate celebration of the CIF champions. Moye finished with 23 kills while Kurke added 13 more. Joe Kelly dished out 48 assists, Nolan Sharp picked up 21 digs and Edward Karrer added 10 digs and six kills for the CIF Southern Section Division 3 champions. The Eagles improved to (24-7) and advanced to the CIF Southern California Boy’s Volleyball Division II Championships Presented by Farmers. The third seeded Eagles faced Mt. Carmel (San Diego Section Open Division Runners-up) on Tuesday with the winner facing the Oak Park/Taft winner tonight; the finals are set for Saturday at a site TBA. Track Notes: The CIF Southern Section Divisional Finals were held at Cerritos College and El Segundo high school was represented. Greta Studier advanced to the CIF Southern Section Division 3 finals in the girls’ triple jump but fell short of medaling. The girls’ 400m relay team, consisting of Nahla Hendricks, Sydney Wilbanks, Niko Van Eimeren and Nicole Saunders set a new school record at the CIF prelims and advanced as well. It’s believed this is the first time an ESHS girls relay has ever advanced to CIF-SS finals. The relay team got off to a good start but did not medal. James Martin was a second alternate in the boys’ triple jump and Kendall Brooks was the first alternate in the girls’ long jump; neither competed. Baseball Playoffs The Eagles advanced to Tuesday’s CIF-SS second round by easily defeating St Joseph (Santa Maria) 15-0. Willem Mostert improved to 9-3 on the year by going five strong innings scattering three hits and walking none. Lars Nootbaar paced the 15-hit attack by going 4-4 with a home run, scored three times and had three RBIs. Mitch Thompson, who was primarily used as a pitcher, came up with his first varsity hit of his career. The Eagles faced Redondo Tuesday and a win would most likely garner them a home game on Friday against the winner of the Palm Desert/ Ocean View game. Softball Playoffs The Lady Eagles pounded Woodcrest Christian 14-1 in the wild card game and then defeated South El Monte 5-3 in the first round to advance to Tuesday’s second round game against North Torrance. A win against the Saxons would propel the Eagles into the CIF-SS Division 4 quarter-finals at home, most likely against Segerstrom today at 3:15pm. Little League and Babe Ruth League: The Little League playoffs are nearing the end and Championship Saturday is this Saturday. The Babe Ruth teams took a break in honor of the Memorial Day weekend but the teams are back in action. There is plenty of action each night and throughout the weekends to watch baseball and the price is right. • Clippers from page 5 “I want to fix it,” Rivers told USA TODAY Sports after his team’s Game 7 and series-ending loss. “I want to win. That’s why I came here.” The Clippers have won, they just haven’t won enough and this season may have been the team’s last and greatest chance at it. Jordan is an unrestricted free agent this July. Rumors of a feud between the Houston-born Jordan and point guard Paul, combined with the center’s ability to receive max money from a team like the Dallas Mavericks, can put a serious dent in any future playoff aspirations for the Clippers if Jordan decides to take his talents elsewhere. It will also put a dent in Doc’s dream of creating a more balanced roster. The Clippers already have no bench. That much we know has lost them a series. If Paul pushes Jordan out of town though, good luck finding any other max-players or role-players who will choose to play for the Clippers instead of a team like say, the Lakers who are suddenly looking poised for a resurgence of their own. This one series against the Houston Rockets summed up the Clippers perfectly. They had their opposition right where they wanted them, and a chance to get to a precipice that they had never been to before. A seemingly insurmountable lead in the series with all of the momentum on their side, but then - they choked. “We didn’t do the things we needed to do,” Griffin said of his team. “We can’t look at anybody but ourselves. It’s disappointing.” Disappointing not only for the players and organization, but for the fans as well who finally thought the team was onto something. This year was the Clippers last best chance at winning. Chris Paul is only getting older. If DeAndre Jordan stays, the team will be strapped for money and if he leaves, they will have yet another glaring weakness in the lineup. All the Clippers needed to do was hold on to a 19 point lead. All they needed to do was not lose three games in a row. All the Clippers needed was just one last gasp of energy. Unfortunately, they had none left. For all of the true Clippers fans out there, excuses might serve to soften the blow just a bit. For everyone else, though, L.A. remains a Lakers town and the Clippers are simply still just the Clippers. • Nahla Hendricks gets out of the blocks in the girls’ 400m relay at the CIF-SS Track Finals.
