Irene Sierra
Irene Harriet Wilson Sierra, age
88 years old passed away at her
home on May 1, 2021. Irene was
born in December 1932 in Newcastle
Upon the Tyne, England.
The date of her exact birth was
in question from family reports that
her parents were too busy to report
her birth on time and too embarrassed
to admit it to the registrar.
Irene was one of 6 siblings
who had their roots in Northern
England during World War II. Irene had many
funny stories about the war, which was typical
of Irene. She found stories in all aspects of her
life and made them larger than life. She had a
fantastic adventure in life, which included living
in three countries, over 25 houses and traveling
the United states during her first retirement. She
was married to Anthony Thorne for over 18
years and had 2 children, Christine and Gary.
She later met her second husband, Ray Sierra
on a blind date and moved to California. Their
travels eventually took them to Northern CA
and Nevada but the pull to El Segundo was too
great and she returned in 2000 and remained
there until her death.
Irene worked hard most of her
life but was trained as a baker as
a young age. She was employed at
a variety of hospitals, nursing
homes and assistant living facilities
cooking and managing their
kitchens. Her last job was managing
the Park Vista apartments in
El Segundo. No one will argue
when Irene worked a job, she gave
it her all. She always went above
and beyond for anyone that crossed her path.
Irene was a marvelous cook and loved to
share food with everyone. She had more friends
than you could count and never knew a stranger,
ever! She loved to travel, redecorate her house
but most of all she loved her granddaughters,
Mika and Amy. She was a wonderful grandmother
and considered them the greatest gift.
Irene is survived by her children Christine
and Gary with their spouses, her sisters, Leslie
and Patricia, several nieces and nephews and
her granddaughters Mika and Amy. The family
will be having a private service in August to
celebrate Irene. •

The Girl Scout Tree Promise
Provided by Shauna Skarin
The Girl Scout Tree Promise (GSTP) provides
Girl Scouts with an opportunity to act
as environmental stewards and work to slow
climate change on a national platform. It invites
every Girl Scout and friend of the Movement
to help plant five million trees in five years
while protecting and honoring many more.
Climate change is one of the top issues
concerning U.S. girls, particularly teens. In
response, we’re tapping our powerful network
of girls and adults to unite to work toward
a solution.
With support from the Elliott Wildlife Values
Project, American Forests, and SciStarter,
GSUSA is launching the Girl Scout Tree
Promise, a national protection initiative to
plant five million trees across the United
States by 2026. Fueled by their passion for
protecting and preserving our planet, Girl Troop leader Shauna Skarin marks the spot for the Crape Myrtle
to be planted.
