to mount any rally. Bailey Gertsch started for
El Segundo and was rolling along until the
Saxons had a four-run sixth inning and went
on to win 5-0.
The game against Torrance can be summed up
as an 8-7 frustrating loss to the seventh-ranked
team in the CIF Southern Section Division 2.
The Tartars took an early 2-0 lead with two
unearned runs off El Segundo starter Bailey
Gertsch. El Segundo was held in check until
they scored four runs in the seventh inning to
take a 4-2 lead highlighted by Sammie Kleiger’s
homerun. The Tartars tied the game in the
bottom of the seventh to send the game into
extra innings. El Segundo’s three-run eighth
wasn’t good enough when the Tartars used a
two-run home run, a single, and hit batter to
set up a two-out walk-off double to score four
runs and defeat the Eagles.
Sammie Kleiger led the El Segundo offense
going 2-for-2 with a home run, double, and
three RBIs. Norah Green had two hits and
drove in two runs, while Shanai Owens had two
hits, scored twice, and had two stolen bases.
The Eagles return to action on the road today
at South Torrance and home next Tuesday at
3:15 p.m. against Lawndale.
Girls Soccer Splits
The Eagles played Torrance and West Torrance
in two key Pioneer League games. They
defeated Torrance 2-1 but fell to West 4-0 to
solidify their second-place standing. In both
games, the Eagles played an aggressive style

Torrance and West Torrance teams.
Torrance took an early first half 1-0 lead
before Trinity Parascandola tied the game on a
free kick she blistered by Tartar goalie Audrey
Silverman. The game was physical that the officials
cleaned up, issuing fouls levied on both
teams, including one that led to Parascandola’s
close-range goal. The two teams had scoring
opportunities, but the play in goal was stellar,
especially by Eagle goaltender Nili Kovacs
who had seven saves. The game-winning goal
came on a blast from freshman midfielder Holly
Wilbanks. Her goal came midway through the
second half from 35 yards out that sailed over
Silverman’s outstretched arms.
The Eagles wind up their regular schedule
this week with the finale honoring the seniors
on Friday at 2:30 p.m. The CIF Southern
Section Division 4 playoffs are slated to start
next week.
Moeller Leads Lacrosse to Victory
The Eagles have enjoyed one of the program’s
most successful seasons after starting
7-2. The Eagles throttled Downey 14-3 and
backed that up with an impressive 19-3 win
over Long Beach Millikan. Syd Moeller and
Maya Jaeger led the Eagles with four goals
each, while Grace Bonny scored three times.
The defense was solid, especially in goal,
where Faith Desemone and a pair of freshman
Isabel Abshear and Kaden Kozbina, combined
on seven saves.
The Eagles took care of the Millikan Rams
19-3 and did it with a balanced scoring lineup
that saw eight girls get into the scoring column.
Grace Bonny led the attack with four goals
while Kat Luetgens, Syd Moeller, Teagan
Meyer, and Maya Jaeger each scored three
goals apiece, and Abi Layne, Riley Myers, and
Tala McGill each scored one goal.
The Eagles travel to Santa Monica today
and host Downey on Saturday at 10 a.m. Next
week they travel to Culver City on Tuesday and
host Beverly Hills or a team to be announced
on Thursday at 3 p.m. •

Katie Croxall drove this pitch to right field.
Annika Nelson’s defense was a big reason the Eagles defeated
Torrance 2-1.
up on the foot of their bed, just to be close
to them. With patience, love, and individual
understanding, eventually, the girl felt safe
enough to sleep in her own bed and opened
up about things in her past.
“Each child is going to be different, and if
you listen to them long enough, you’ll hear
what the root of the problem really is,” she
says. According to her, it’s all about building
trust and being truthful. Luna believes that
God’s gift to her was her natural instinct to
be able to communicate with children, and
it’s her faith that helps her live her life.
Her advice for new parents is this: you
have to sacrifice. The time of raising kids
is so fast, she says, and you only have that
short window of pouring yourself into their
lives in order for them to have something to
fall back on as an adult.
The most rewarding part about this facet
of her life, she says, is getting to see kids
grow into happy and healthy adults. “The
most rewarding part was when they left, and
they called back, and they’d come over and
see me, and they would bring their kids with
them and show me that they made a good
life,” she says fondly.
As for her children, Luna sees her son (now
a teacher in El Segundo) nearly every day.
She is best friends with her daughter-in-law.
She enjoys spending lots of time with her
two granddaughters.
“I have fallen in love with El Segundo,”
says Luna, “It’s a very friendly town.” Living
in Park Vista, she says she enjoys monthly
resident meetings where she can voice questions
and concerns, even through Covid over
Zoom. With optional activities, trips, parties,
and a community room, Luna loves to explore
and be active, and bond with her community.
During Covid, her complex ensured that all
of the seniors had access to safe and secure
vaccine appointments and transportation.
Prior to having a stroke last year, Luna
would ride her bike five miles, four days a
week. She loves to go to the beach, and eat
at local restaurants, and spend time with her
family, be it a Chinese food night at home or
a birthday party. “The simple things in life
are the things that I like to do.”
Linda’s life so far has been spent loving
and giving to those around her, and her advice
for transitioning into senior years is to
walk through these times softly and embrace
the process. Having spent her seventy years
making decisions for herself and her children,
she says that it’s okay to let her children start
to steer the ship now.
She is looking forward to her granddaughter’s
upcoming eighth-grade graduation. Her
goal for the foreseeable future is to regain
her strength after last year’s stroke, something
with which she’s already made remarkable
progress. “You know,” she ponders, “a life’s
story is very detailed and very intense at
times… I just want to live out the rest of my
life knowing that I gave my very best to my
grandchildren and my son and daughter-in-law
and that I love the Lord with all my heart.” •
