The streak ultimately reached 459 dual-match victories in a row and had started when Richard Nixon was president and gas was 39 cents per gallon. You can add one more impressive high school streak to that list, the Santa Monica Viking’s softball team concluded their run of 144 consecutive Ocean League wins. Their downfall and the streak breaker came in a 5-1 loss to the El Segundo Eagles. Make no mistake about it this was a game that the Eagles had looked forward to since last season’s close losses to the Vikings. “I think the team took it hard last year after both losses. So with the team we had returning this season the girls had it in their minds to break up their streak,” said head coach Keith Cameron. Lost in the 5-1 win was the fact the Eagles have had so much adversity surrounding the team for most of the season. With injuries and other distractions Coach Cameron has had to look to a couple of freshman including Gabby Benjamin and Kaili Reitano to start as well as leaning on the senior leadership of Alyssa Pelegrin, Julie Roach and Megan Truesdale. In what became won of the program’s great wins each of these five players made an impact on the outcome. In the first inning with runners in scoring position with two outs Reitano fielded a slow roller, barehanded and all in one motion threw out the Santa Monica hitter by a step. In the third inning with two outs and a runner on second base Reitano dove to her left to smother a sharp ground ball and threw the batter out by a step. Gabby Benjamin’s squeeze bunt scored Julie Roach who had singled earlier in the second inning. Gabby’s older sister Monique Benjamin then tripled and scored on Gianna Taormina’s RBI single for a 2-0 lead. In the third inning Cierra Kessler reached base and eventually scored on an errant throw. In the fifth inning Jasmine Krauss, who had three hits, singled and Kessler doubled. Pelegrin then smacked a two run single to make it 5-0. Santa Monica’s only run came on a towering fly ball that sent Kenedee Jamerson circling the bags. Truesdale tossed a two hitter and had nine strike outs in her biggest game of the season. Other than the leadoff homerun hit in the sixth Truesdale was in total control. She retired the last six batters in a row including striking out the side in the seventh inning. The Eagles were on the road this week at Culver City on Tuesday and Hawthorne today. They’ll wrap up the regular season next week hosting Lawndale on Monday and traveling to Santa Monica on Wednesday. Baseball As the season winds down the Eagles are making a push to be one of the top three teams to make the post season. With convincing 13-4 and 17-2 wins over Hawthorne they are not about to look past Lawndale this week. The Cardinals, who have struggled throughout the season usually play up for the Eagles. El Segundo traveled to Lawndale on Tuesday and host the Cardinals today at 3:15pm. Prior to the game the seniors in the program will be honored for their dedication and hard work throughout their high school baseball careers. Next week could provide a glimpse of the Eagle’s playoff hopes. They’ll face Santa Monica at home on Tuesday and round out the season with a game against the Vikings on the road on Thursday. Both teams are tied for second place and the winner could get a first round home game in the CIF-SS Division 3 playoffs that start May 19. Boys’ Lacrosse The El Segundo boys’ lacrosse team secured their second Ocean League title in a row with a 15-8 win over rival Culver City. The Eagles finished the season with an 11-4 record going 8-0 in league play. After a lackluster start to the season the Eagles steadily got better and better and nailed down their second league title in two years as a CIF team. The offense, which is averaging 13.7 goals a game, finished fifth in CIF Southern Section in scoring. The scoring was anchored by Junior attackman Cory Lund’s 110 points. On the defensive side, senior Drew Bonney and junior Cayman Barber were backed up quite ably by junior goalie Alex Nolan. Boys’ Volleyball The Eagles took it on the chin while playing in the Redondo Power Classic. They fell to, San Clemente, Westlake and Burroughs (Burbank), the sixteenth, seventeenth and twentieth ranked teams in the nation after defeating West Torrance and twenty-fourth ranked La Jolla. The Eagles faced Santa Monica on Tuesday with the Ocean League title on the line. A win would create a two-way tie and most likely a coin flip for which team enters the CIF-SS playoffs as the top team. • Megan Truesdale tossed her best game against Santa Monica Julie Roach’s head first slide into third base was picture perfect. limiting the Vikings to just two hits while striking out nine.
