Page 8 April 30, 2015 EL SEGUNDO HERALD Eagles Boys Volleyball works towards CIF Sports Day from page 5 last round and Tom Brady - now the face of the league - was drafted in the sixth round of the 2000 draft. The NBA playoffs will still be in full effect where you can watch stars such as the likely MVP Stephen Curry, or even LeBron James battle it out. Depending on how the series goes, there may even be a Game 7 showdown between the Los Angeles Clippers and the San Antonio Spurs. What would be better than that? Speaking of Game 7’s, the NHL playoffs will also be in effect and there is sure to be a Game 7 or two going on, full of hard hitting and all the trash-talking that you could ask for. No matter what sport you are in to or what game excites you the most, this Saturday, May 2nd, is sure to have you covered. The day is certain to be a win-win for all those involved, including the fans, the participants, and the major networks carrying the events taking place. If we all can’t be like Floyd Mayweather and collect almost $200 million for what will be at most 36 minutes of work, then we can at least pretend for one day, sit back, relax and enjoy it all. This Saturday is the perfect day to appreciate the game’s that we love and the sports that bring us all to life. Just remember that you, the fan, are worth every single penny. • Photos by S. Sharp Four years ago the El Segundo Boys Volleyball Team knew there would be a bright future down the road. This year’s senior heavy team has worked hard to earn the top spot in CIF division 3, led by captains Matt Carter, Teddy Karrer and Nolan Sharp. “The squad is deep in talent,” says outside hitter Teddy Karrer. “We have pin hitters like Brandon Kurke, Nick Rable (Springfield College) and our middle hitters Stephen Moyes and Matt Carter. We have a great ability to put the ball down.” This year’s team finds their balanced offense run by sophomore setter Joe Kelly, who grows each week playing with a strong junior-senior line up. “The difference in this year’s team is our trust in our strong serve-receive and defense. With these in place we have the ability to run a strong attack on our opponents,” states libero Nolan Sharp (Pepperdine). The Eagles remain undefeated (4-0) in Ocean League play as they recently defeated last year’s league champion Culver City and past CIF winner Santa Monica. “We’re now looking forward to the Redondo Classic Tournament, this will give us a shot at some of the top teams in Southern California and will help us prepare for the CIF playoffs,“ states middle hitter Matt Carter. As May quickly approaches the Eagles will work hard under the Bacil- Hovland coaching staff in hopes of bringing the title home. • Outside Hitter Nick Rable brings the heat. Ryan Maryoung  pitched six strong innings to earn his fourth victory. The frosh/soph improved their record to (10-5, 2-0) with their victory at Culver City 15-0.  Galicia improved to 4-1 with five shutout innings.  Galicia, Jake Nichols, and Shane Salzman each had two hits to lead El Segundo.  Volleyball The Eagles (12-4, 4-0) have quietly made big strides and are the top ranked team in the CIF Southern Section Division 3 polls. The Eagles have put together a nine match winning streak and haven’t lost a set since losing two straight to Buchannan (Clovis) in the Best of the West Tournament on March 14. All four losses this year have been to teams ranked in the top 20 nationally including Loyola (2), Newberry Park (6), Buchannan (16) and Valencia (17). Boys’ Lacrosse El Segundo (9-4, 5-0) at Culver City (7-8, 6-1), 6 p.m.: The Ocean League title comes down to the final regular-season game (barring upsets earlier in the week, of course), with Culver City trying to earn a tie for the top spot and a share of the title for the second season in a row. El Segundo, in only its second season as a CIF program and first in the Ocean League, can win the title outright by beating the Centaurs for the second time. The Eagles won 14-9 at home two weeks ago. • Sports Shorts El Segundo Baseball Beats Culver City 4-0 Photos by Marcy Dugan, marcyduganphoto.com Pitching a great game is #1 Spencer Long.
