So when the Eagles faced Hawthorne on the road they knew it would be another test for them. It was a nail bitter but the Eagles prevailed winning 3-1 in nine innings. The Cougars’ Alyssa Casillas tripled and scored Hawthorne’s only run in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. It stayed that way until the seventh inning when  Allison Tatnal doubled and scored the tying run with one out in the seventh inning.  Monique Benjamin hit a solo home run and Alyssa Pelegrin doubled and scored on a double by Emma Burner for the go-ahead runs in the ninth inning. Shannon Brooker was stellar allowing the first inning run and then baffling the Cougars the rest of the way. She scattered three other hits, walked one and struck out 13 to pick up the win. El Segundo dominated Lawndale 11-0 in the their next Ocean League game and improved to 4-0 in league play and keep pace with Santa Monica; also 4-0.  The Eagles hosted the first two rounds of the El Segundo Tournament, now in its 30th year. The sixteen team tournament, that started last Saturday and wraps up this Saturday, has some of the top teams around including Westlake, POLA,  LB Wilson, Redondo and San Pedro. El Segundo faced Bishop Montgomery in the first round of their tournament. The Eagles started Monique Benjamin in the circle; she looked magnificent. All she did was toss a five-inning no-hitter, walked two and struck out two as the Eagles won easily 8-0. Her only troubled inning was in the second inning but she induced a double play and striking out a hitter after hitting a batter.  On a damp overcast day the Eagles shined with their bats in the first inning against the Knights. Julie Roach had a two run single followed by Sarah Bergren’s RBI single to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead. Later on Katherine Burner’s RBI single made it 5--0 after one inning. In the second inning Alyssa Pelegrin’s double off the leftfield wall scored Allison Tatnal from first base. Roach drew a walk and then Emma Burner’s long fly ball scored Tatnal from third base to make it 7-0. Amber Coon’s RBI single was all the Eagles needed. El Segundo threatened in the third and fourth innings but came up empty. The game was called after five innings with the eight run mercy rule in effect.  The Eagles faced Banning in the second game in what could only be described as ‘you had to be there to believe it’ game. The El Segundo led 11-0 and then had to hold on for an 11-10 win. In the first inning the Eagles started strong offensively with Pelegrin’s 2-run double. Then Julie Roach clobbered a mammoth 2-run homerun to give the Eagles a 4-0 lead.  With ace Shannon Brooker in the circle the game seemed well in hand. The Eagles scored three more when Pelegrin pounded a bases loaded clearing triple to up the score to 7-0. The Pilots threatened in their half of the second inning but came away empty. In the third inning the Eagles loaded the bases and Katherine Burner drew a nine pitch at bat RBI walk. An unusual balk was called to make 9-0 and Brooker emptied the bases with an RBI single to make it 11-0.Then the wheels fells off and chaos followed in a bizarre fourth inning.  When the Eagles went quietly in their half of the fourth, the Pilots, trailing 11-1, made some noise. Brooker ran into control problems, the defense had a let down and all of a sudden Banning was back in the game. The Pilots scored nine runs on one questionable hit, were aided by three El Segundo errors, five walks and two hit batters and they stranded two runners before the inning was over. The game was called due to a tournament enforced time limit after the fourth inning or they might still be playing. “I can’t even believe what I saw that’s not indicative of how we play,” said Cameron. The Eagles have a big week having to face Santa Monica on the road this past Tuesday, at Beverly Hills today and hosting North Torrance, the top ranked team in the CIF-SS Division 4 polls, Friday night at 7pm. The Eagles play at 3pm in the semi-finals of their tournament on Saturday and a win would propel them into the third consecutive El Segundo Tournament final at 7:30pm.  Baseball The Eagles have put themselves in the driver’s seat of winning their first Ocean League title by sweeping Culver City and are 4-0 entering this week’s action with Hawthorne. The Eagles also won a big game against La Mirada in the Redondo Tournament. Trailing 4-1 in the seventh inning Noah Bergren hit a three run homerun to tie it, then the Eagles mauled three pitchers in an eight run nineth inning to win it 12-4. The Eagles host Hawthorne today at 3:15pm with a special presentation afterwards for long time assistant Chuck Schaffer; something the community shouldn’t miss. The Eagles host Lawndale next Tuesday at 3:15pm.  The J.V. team defeated Long Beach Millikan See Girls’ Softball, page 8 Cierra Kessler comes up throwing from left field.
