And while lodging is secured at LMU, the Host Town Committee still needs donations to pay for the three nights. Yarroll also mentioned receiving a “barrage of emails” from parents at El Segundo Middle School who want to help the cause, as well as the participation of El Segundo High School Key and other clubs. To first welcome the arriving visitors, a passing of the torch run will be held in front of the Mattel Toys store on July 21 at 4:30. An official ceremony will follow at 6 or 6:30 at Dockweiler Beach. “We’re still working on the 23rd and 24th,” Yarroll said, adding that a search is in progress to find volunteer directors to spearhead planning efforts. “For housing, it would be ideal to have a couple of directors who already have a relationship with LMU. On the transportation side, we welcome those with experience in Public Utilities Commission permitting and vehicle insurance to direct transportation since the plan is to use a half-dozen or so mini buses to transport the athletes. It would also be great to get directors with catering and banquet experience to oversee food since we will have to provide three meals a day and snacks to our visitors.” Directors overseeing athlete training activities would preferably have nursing backgrounds, while those with security or police department experience would see to the safety of the athletes and protect any personal belongings. In order to fast-track the donation process, Yarroll and fellow volunteers plan to hold an invitation-only even at Moto Art on Thursday, May 28 from 6 to 9 p.m. that will not be open to the general public. “We’re trying to get multiple service clubs like Kiwanis and Rotary and also the El Segundo Chamber to reach out to employees at major corporations who may not be aware of the event,” he said. “Ultimately, we want to make this as inclusive as we possibly can by bringing in every company, every church, every school--just everyone… to awareness. We’ll have roundtables where people can make small pledges at local businesses and we’ll be handing out flyers to businesses in town. This event, this opportunity, is probably once-in-a-lifetime for El Segundo and for Los Angeles.
