Mike Rotolo from front page
projects. He lauds the leadership of Rotolo.
“The great thing about working with Mike
is that we truly collaborate on everything as
a matter of everyday practice,” he said. “He
runs things by me, I run things by him and,
we make a joint decision and move forward
without delay. We don’t have committees or
a bunch of executive staff to have to get on
board with how we operate. Decisions are
instantaneous.”
“There are a few things that make TG great
and set us apart from our competition. First,
Mike, myself and several of our staff have
worked for large general contractors in the past.
TG may be a smaller general contractor, but
we operate like and bring the sophistication of
a large general contractor to the table for our
clients. Secondly, our clients get the Presidents
and VP’s full attention and involvement in
their projects from start to finish. Because of
that, challenges and issues get resolved very
quickly. TG’s working environment is truly
collaborative. I hate to use that term, because
I think that it is overused, but everyone at TG
is willing to do whatever it takes to get the job
done. Titles are irrelevant, and we all discuss
situations openly, even if it is not someone’s
‘responsibility,’ so we get the best ideas and
solutions, because the discussion is open, and
no one has to worry about ‘being wrong’ or
butting into someone’s conversation. That’s
what makes it truly collaborative.”
Jim Van Zanten, co-CEO of Vista Sotheby
Realtors as well as the team leader for the Van
Zanten Depaoli Group, has a long and successful
partnership with Rotolo and TG Construction.
TG recently completed an 11-unit apartment
building for Van Zanten in Manhattan Beach.
“Mike is a low-key guy with a degree in
construction management,” Van Zanten said.
“He goes by the book and uses high-end
construction software to keep all the information
straight. As a result of his education and
training, Mike is much more organized than
your average contractor, and this is refreshing!
Mike has helped me build several apartments
and townhouse projects, as well as a church
building.”
Fahria Qader, Director, Pacific Visions and
Architecture of the Aquarium of the Pacific,
located in Long Beach, has established a
mutually beneficial relationship with Rotolo
and TG. TG has completed multiple projects
for the Aquarium since 2007.
“The Aquarium always goes through a formal
request for proposal process when hiring contractors
for large projects, “she said. “Because
of their price competitiveness and experience,
they won-out against others. We initially heard
about TG Construction because they were
the first general contractor to build a LEED
Platinum building in Southern California.”
LEED buildings utilize “green” technology
and components.
“Every project that was built by TG Construction
at the Aquarium has had Mike as the lead
and he was a great partner to us,” Qader said.”
In working with us, he was honest, responsive,
and showed attention to detail. It is also for
the same reason that when working on our
largest expansion to date---the Pacific Visions
wing---we asked Mike to be on our side of
the table and be the Owner’s Representative.”
Projects that TG has their construction stamp
on include sewage pump stations, hotels, retail
projects, hospitals, as well as institutional,
industrial, and mixed-use properties. TG has
worked for and with Disneyland and Boeing,
TRW Redondo Beach, Northrop Grumman,
K-Mart, and Chapman General Hospital, as
well as completing multiple projects in Hawaii,
including the Waipahu Town Center.
Rotolo attended St. Bernard High School,
received an Associate of Arts in construction
technology from Santa Monica City College,
and a Bachelor of Science from Cal State
University, Long Beach, garnering a degree
in construction technology.
Rotolo said that he was always interested in
construction-type endeavors at an early age,
noting his Boy Scout background. He moved
to Hawaii for a while, working on construction
projects. Once he returned to California, he
toiled for an Orange County firm for nearly
a decade before fortuitously landing a job
with TG Construction, greatly diminishing
his commute.
One of the projects that Rotolo is most proud
of is the renovation of the Disneyland Autopia
attraction. “It was a really tough project, “he
said. It was during this timeframe that Rotolo
was diagnosed with sarcoma. The Autopia
project opened on-time, despite Rotolo’s health
challenges.
He said that TG likes to tackle more demanding
projects, including working with
the local aerospace industry. His company,
staffed by about 15 employees, espouses the
motto “quality, not quantity.” He embraces the
small-company vibe, saying that most of his
employees relish the benefits of working for
a smaller general contractor.
Rotolo lives in El Segundo with his wife,
Mary. When not overseeing the day-to-day
details of running his business, he likes to play
volleyball, fish, ski, camp, and give back to
the community by volunteering for numerous
posts, including past stints coaching AYSO
soccer and mentoring local Scouts. He said
that he “tries to stay connected” to the citizens
in his hometown.
In this time of grave uncertainty, Rotolo said
that the current climate is “certainly challenging,
but we are blessed to still be working. We
are taking steps to be ready,” he said when the
effects of the virus diminish.” Our job sites are
up-and-running,” he said, with measures In
place to protect his workers. “We see ourselves
as vital to growing the economy.”
Rotolo is justifiably proud of TG Construction.
“For a smaller company, we have filled
some big boots…my employees are happy and
proud of their achievements, which makes for
a good working environment.” •
