two hitters later, Ritsuha Funabashi belted a
tape-measure two-run homer to make it 8-0.
In the third inning the Prospects picked
up four runs on no hits highlighted by four
walks, a wild pitch and a fielder’s choice.
Jesse Martinez silenced Kitasuna in the third
inning by striking out the side.
In the fifth inning, the Prospects made it a
game by scoring two runs. Martinez doubled
and scored on Deegan Grgas’ monster two-run
homer to make it 8-6, but that’s as close as
they would come. Kitasuna added six more runs
on seven hits to put the game away. Tokutaro
Ichijo, Towa Kai, Hibiki Yumisashi and Ryota
Nakai each had singles and Ritsuha Funabshi
had a two-run single to make it 11-6. Soshi
Nakatani’s three-run blast capped the scoring
to make it 14-6.
It was another entertaining tournament that
brought together some of the top 12-year-olds
in the area and gave us a glimpse of what it
takes to be the world’s best baseball team in
that age group. A big thank you was extended
to the staff at the snack bar and especially to
Staci Sperber-McEwan, who grilled nearly
50 hamburgers for the Kitasuna team and put
smiles on some very hungry faces throughout
the three-day tournament. •
