EL SEGUNDO HERALD April 2, 2015 Page 3 Letters Concerned About Crime Robberies in El Segundo are up 700% from 2014.  Does this concern you as much as it does me? There are two main reasons for this increase: • Proposition 47 was passed in November 2014. Many previous felony charges are now misdemeanors.  Among others, grand theft under $950.00 is now a misdemeanor and petty thefts are misdemeanors, regardless of number of priors. • We currently have 58 police officers.  In 1998 we had 72 officers.  That is 14 fewer officers patrolling a much larger area, including Plaza El Segundo and the Point. On weekdays we only have three officers patrolling our entire city.  This is not enough. If all three officers are tied up in one call, no one is patrolling our city! Criminals can use technology to track our officers and network with each other.  They can monitor our officers’ communication and whereabouts.  They know if our officers are tied up. More officers and visible police presence will deter crime. What can we do? • Voice your concern with our city council by writing letters or talking to them at a council meeting. • Write letters seeking a repeal of Proposition 47. Send them to city council who will forward them to Sacramento. – Lisa Abbate  El Segundo Cares The volunteers for El Segundo Cares made their first trip this year to the West Los Angeles V.A. Hospital, March 20. It was a huge success, thanks to the generosity of the El Segundo residents. We took over 60 large bags of needed items. The gratitude of the men and women patients was unbelievable. Our next scheduled event is May 29. It will be a true El Segundo event, barbeque and all. The basics are covered, but if any businesses in town would like to participate and show their support for the vets, please join us. Entertainers are needed during the noon lunch. Maybe the Car Museum could bring a couple of cars. Any financial help should be sent to the V. A. Hospital, Volunteer Services and note the money is to be used for El Segundo events to benefit the veterans. A special thanks to The Women’s Club, El Segundo Animal Hospital, Masonic Lodge and the Methodist Church for making May 29th happen. Thanks and blessings to the hard working, dedicated volunteers. – Janice Cruikshank Skewed Water Rates Effective April I, 2015 and for the first time in El Segundo’s history, we who live in a single family residence will have to pay more for the same amount of water used as those who live in multi-family residences. Am1 I the only one upset by this inequitable, unjust, skewed rating system or is this some kind of an April Fools joke by city hall? I’m not laughing. – Liz Gamholz Police Reports Monday, March 23, 2015 One male adult was arrested at 0331 hours from El Segundo Boulevard and Sepulveda Boulevard for misdemeanor DUI (drugs) A burglary (residential) report was taken at 0600 hours from the 200 block of West Acacia Avenue. The lower class people here in Mundruczó’s daring and bold film, just happens to be non-human, real-life Zsófia Psotta in White God, a Magnolia Pictures release. In Hungarian with English subtitles, the film transcends its European region to connect its display of politically and socially marginalized cultures to a universal level. White God follows two youthful and innocent characters whose early first-hand experiences with injustice lead to full character changes, into disillusioned and battle-hardened learners of the sometimes cruel real-world.
