According to Coach Lopez, who oversees the tournament, there is a waiting list to enter and they’ve had to turn back a number of teams. As it is the three day event consumes both Brett Field and the softball field as well as a field at Marine Field in Manhattan Beach. Come out and enjoy some of the most entertaining baseball and watch some of the top 11 and 12 year olds in Southern California. Come early and watch the discipline and crisp pre-game infield that both the Kitasuna and German National teams take. Don’t forget to bring a pad and pen to get a souvenir autograph from these players who one day could be playing in the Major Leagues. The team is comprised of 12 year olds who were on the first El Segundo 10 year old all star team that advanced to the state tournament. Coach McAndrews said, “As this tournament grows it definitely becomes more of an honor to be a part of it considering the Japanese and German teams are tops in their countries and the Kitasuna team is the defending Little League World Series champions.” The ESLL team looks impressive and could give any number of the travel club teams a close game. The roster includes Brendan McAndrews, Wyatt Coulter, Cooper Stolnack, James Pearson, Cameron Johnson, Jason McGowan, Tommy Tichy, Nelson Taback, Jack Fruchtman, Ben Hill, Ben Villa, Cooper Katskee, Sebastian Brockman, Owen Kirsten and Chance Vander Linden. The Beach Cities Academy has two teams entered and both are highly competitive. Lopez and Sean McNally, another former El Segundo high school baseball great, coach one of the teams. Their team is regarded as one of the top twenty travel ball teams, in this age group, in the country. Lopez’s team consists of players from Pacific Palisades, Fullerton, Los Angeles, Manhattan Beach and Torrance. He says that this team, which has been together for three years, will be one to watch during the three day tournament. Though Lopez’s team doesn’t have any El Segundo players on his team the other one that is coached by Sean Thompson does. Perennial El Segundo Little League all stars that play for Coach Thompson include Eddie Grant, Conrad Bernstein and Jack Stoker. All three were member of the 10 year old all star team that competed for a state championship. The El Segundo Little League will have its handyman BILL’S to visit and play a series of games against the Kitasuna team. When the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami struck the coast of Japan the magnitude 9.0 undersea quake caused devastation and essentially the canceling of the Beach City team’s trip. Beach City Academy owner, Richard Murad, brainstormed with others and decided to bring some relief to some very unfortunate people. He invited the Japan team to leave the devastation behind and free their minds of the turmoil that had wreaked havoc on their city and country. He invited the team and their supporters to El Segundo and play a tournament of games against local teams right here at Brett Field. Murad said, “It was the least we could do for all the suffering they had to overcome.” Over the past four years the tournament has gained local, regional and national attention not only because of the International teams playing but the local teams that participate in it as well.
