her shoulder just prior to the season starting.
The only junior on the roster is second-year
player Jade Johnson. She will pitch and also
play a utility role as an infielder and outfielder.
Coach McCann’s roster will feature eight
sophomores. The list includes All-Ocean
League shortstop Katie Croxall, who hit .438
as freshman. Mya Bennett is a utility player
who has so much upside still ahead of her.
She can literally play any position on the
field. Erin Graner is an infielder with great
skills who is demonstrating her knack to be
another great hitter in the lineup. Kaila Phillips
and Kelly Carignan are developing into good
outfielders. Leah Abitante, Shanai Owens and
Marlee Johnson are all infielders who can
play either up the middle or on the corners.
Sophia Marrero, who catches and plays
third base, has shown the coaching staff that
she could be one of the pieces to help win
another Ocean League title. Marrero, the only
freshman on the team, has been impressive
behind the plate.
Baseball Team Looking to
Three-Peat League Title
The Eagles have won two consecutive Ocean
League titles and are looking to win a third.
The strength of the team looks to be its defense,
while the pitching has depth. The left side
of the infield and an all-league centerfielder
return, while last season’s diamond in the
rough assumes the role of the ace of the staff.
The Eagles have four key senior returning
starters that will cement the offense. Third base-
man Ethan Burner might be the most versatile
player on the team. He led El Segundo with a
.381 batting average and 14 stolen bases, and
had the best ERA and saves as a pitcher. Matt
Romero is a three-year starter and anchors the
outfield. His speed and strong arm along with
his potential at the plate make him one of the
team’s top hitting players. Benny Casillas is
another in a long line of outstanding players
to play shortstop for the Eagles. His range and
strong arm as well as his baseball IQ make
him one of the top infielders in the South
Bay. Ian Bonham’s move from second base to
first base as a junior provided stability to an
infield that needed his unselfish attitude and
defensive skills.
On the mound, Quinn Kirsten will be the
ace this season after leading the team with
six wins as a junior and an impressive 1.56
ERA. This season he has been even more
remarkable with a minuscule 0.67 ERA in 21
innings. The staff is deep with seniors Cameron
Dornblaser, Cooper Sutherland, Bonham, and
juniors Aiden McRoberts and Nick Villa. One
other senior on the staff, Chance Nelson, is
out with an injury and his return is unknown
as he continues to recover.
The Eagles have started their season 3-4
with all three wins coming in extra innings.
Their offensive output has struggled, but the
defense and pitching have been solid. They
started Ocean League play this week against
Beverly Hills on Tuesday and host the Normans
today at 3:15 p.m. •
Adri Hebert is not only one of the top third baseman in the South Bay, but is one of the team’s top hitters too.
Kaili Reitano is a two-time all -league player. She hit .412 as a junior and .345 as a sophomore.

Area High School Students to
Attend Chevron Design Challenge
at El Camino
El Camino College will welcome area high
school students to the 2019 Los Angeles South
Bay Regional Chevron Design Challenge
on Saturday, April 13. This daylong design
competition offers students real-world experience
in engineering, with final presentations
scheduled for 3 p.m.
The Chevron Design Challenge is a one-day
competition that gives engineering students
the opportunity to use creativity and problemsolving
skills. Project Lead The Way (PLTW)
high school students from across the state,
who either are currently taking or have taken
PLTW’s Introduction to Engineering Design/
Intro to Design class at El Camino College or
their high schools, are invited to participate.
Working in teams of three, students will
compete against other high school teams to
address a problem relating to portable, renewable,
and affordable energy. All students
will build portfolios and then submit them
to a panel of judges who will review them.
Prizes will be awarded to the top five teams
in each region; the top three teams from each
region are invited to compete in the statewide
competition in Bakersfield on May 4.
This competition supports the goal of
increasing science, technology, engineering
and mathematics (STEM) opportunities for
students. For more information about the
Chevron Design Challenge view the PLTW
California website: www.pltwcalifornia.org,
