El Segundo High School student mentors from the El Segundo Cyber Education Initiative (ESCEI) are hosting a free Cyber Education Workshop on Thursday, March 23 from 5:30- 8:30 p.m. The event is for fourth and fifth grade students and their parents, and will take place at the ESHS Performing Arts Center. Please register and obtain tickets for this event at www.escei-eshs.com/events The hands-on workshop teaches computer science and Internet safety in an exciting way through the use of innovative technology and educational video games. ESHS’ visionary student mentors are enrolled in the high school’s Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Engineering Pathway, and in conjunction with the Computer Science Club they established ESCEI last fall to provide computer science and Internet safety education to elementary school students. The Engineering Pathway is funded by Chevron—a long-time community partner for the ESUSD and a corporate sponsor of PLTW. “We encourage all ESUSD fourth and fifth grade students to attend this exciting event,” said Shrenil Sharma, the ESHS junior who founded ESCEI along with some of his Engineering Pathway classmates. “This workshop will use the popular hobby of video gaming to spark an interest in the wider field of computer science.” Imperial Highway Street Resurfacing Project The eastbound lanes of Imperial Highway will be resurfaced in the upcoming weeks between Sepulveda Boulevard and Hornet Way. The project is scheduled to begin March 27 and is anticipated to continue for approximately one month. Working hours will be Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. One weekend will be utilized for paving, which will be done continuously from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday. Notices will be placed on nearby property owners’ front doors 72 hours prior to construction and signboards will also be placed two weeks in advance informing motorists of the future construction. The schedule may change based on material availability, weather conditions, or other unforeseen circumstances. Property owners are advised to inform tenants and other regular users of their building(s) of construction activities as well so they may plan accordingly. With this project, four inches of the roadway surface will be removed and replaced with new rubberized asphalt concrete. The new roadway surface can be used soon after it has cooled off. However, traffic control devices will be placed to guide vehicles to lanes that can be safely used during construction. Drivers are asked to obey the traffic controls, for everyone’s safety. For questions on any onsite, day-to-day issues about timing and access, contact Ryan Palmer, Shawnan Corporation (562) 803-9977. For general questions, call Floriza Rivera, Project Manager, City of El Segundo (310) 524-2361. “Can You Hear Me” Call Scam Warning The Better Business Bureau is warning consumers to hang up if they receive a call from a “Can You Hear Me” scam, where the caller asks that question or suggests they are having trouble with the their headset. The plot is to get the consumer to say “Yes,” which can then be recorded and used later to make it sound like the consumer authorized a major purchase.  Authorities advise people who receive the call and question to say nothing and hang up. Provide Input on Metro’s 2018 Fiscal Year Budget As Metro begins to put together its budget for the 2018 fiscal year (July 1, 2017 through June 30, 2018) in order to set transportation policies across LA County, the agency seeks public input. Citizens are welcome to attend the South Bay Service Council meeting scheduled on Friday, March 10 at 9:30 a.m. at Inglewood City Hall (1 W. Manchester Boulevard). A subsequent meeting will take place at the same location on Friday, May 12 also at 9:30 a.m. Obituaries Hoffman, Dorothy Elinor Flaherty March 31, 1928- March 2, 2017 Loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Dorothy Hoffman, passed away surrounded by loved ones on March 2, 2017 at her home in El Segundo. Dorothy Flaherty was born in Hayward, California and was the fourth of seven children born to Leonard and Margaret Flaherty. The family moved to Oakland where she attended St. Cyril’s Elementary School and graduated from Merritt High School. After high school, Dorothy worked as a secretary until she met John (Jack) Hoffman, USN, in 1947. After their second child, they relocated to Los Angeles and settled in Playa del Rey where they raised nine children in total. Besides being a loving mother to nine, she also had a successful career in real estate in the west Los Angeles area. In 1998 Dorothy and Jack moved to El Segundo. Dorothy was a staunch Catholic and patriot. She loved to discuss politics with anyone, even if they disagreed. But nothing came before her family. Dorothy instilled a love of life, faith, family, and country in her children and theirs. Her legacy is carried on by her 9 kids, 30 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren. Dorothy is predeceased by her husband, Jack, in 2011. She is survived by her nine children, David (Sarah), Jean (Donald), Chris (Sharon), Janet (Joseph), Lynn (John), Tony (Lynn), Lisa, Gregg (Gina), Jill (Michael). • Not Our “Best” Herald Publications has been advised that Dr. Silvia Cardona has distributed door hangers that state they were “Voted Best Dentist in El Segundo”. Due to the fact, we’ve been running our “Best of the Best” winners section the past three weeks, we don’t want any confusion. We’d like to make clear that while some other publication may have voted Dr. Cardona as the “Best of the Best” for 2016, it was not the residents of El Segundo, who participated in the El Segundo Herald’s recent “Best of the Best” award sections. We have no record of Dr. Cardona winning the Herald’s “Best of the Best”. •
