Lundquists Make $70 Million
Unrestricted Gift to LA BioMed, Will
Be Renamed Lundquist Institute
Southern California philanthropists Melanie
and Richard Lundquist (also President of Continental
Development Corporation) have donated
$70 million to the Los Angeles Biomedical
Research Institute (LA BioMed), a gift that
will transform the institution by giving it a
sustainable source of unrestricted funding to
recruit and retain top researchers and provide the
needed support and infrastructure. In conjunction
with the gift, LA BioMed will be renamed the
Lundquist Institute in the near future.
The Lundquists announced their gift at a
joint 70 birthday dinner held last month at
the soon to be opened 78,000-square-foot
Medical Research Laboratory building on the
LA BioMed campus. That building, set to
open March 30, will contain offices, wet and
dry labs and an 18,000-square foot incubator
operated by BioLabs, which will have room
to house about 20 to 30 startup companies.
The Lundquists’ gift will help the institute
undertake more discoveries and launch many
more companies that will meaningfully boost
Southern California as a biotech center. The
donation will make it more enticing for biotech
startups to set up shop in the South Bay.
That could boost the local economy while
competing with other biotech regions such
as San Francisco, San Diego and Boston,
where many life science companies that
get their start in Los Angeles often end up.
The future Lundquist Institute, with its new
source of funding, can now anchor a biotech
hub in the South Bay.

LAFC Announces Multi-Year
Partnership with Chevron
The Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC)
last week announced a multi-year partnership
with Chevron Corporation. Chevron will
serve as the club’s official energy partner
showcasing its commitment to local
communities as the presenting partner of two
soccer refurbishments per year throughout
the Southern California region.
The partnership promises to deliver
community engagement by providing two
local schools access to updated spaces to
play the game of soccer per year. The first
refurbishment is set to take place at Bud
Carson Middle School in the Hawthorne
School District and will receive a full-sized
grass field, complete with updated facility
equipment. Students at Bud Carson took part in
soccer training and drills at an announcement
event on Feb. 26, led by LAFC personnel.
In addition to the refurbishments, Chevron
is excited to work with LAFC to provide
access to the World’s Game in expanding
the Chevron Soccer Academy to Southern
California, helping bring professional soccer
training to youth in the area. With the
creation of boys and girls soccer combines
this March at LAFC facilities, the Chevron
Soccer Academy will continue its mission of
providing the proper resources, knowledge and
support system for player to learn and grow.
The partnership also includes additional
community-focused programs as well as elements
to engage fans through integrated digital
signage at Banc of California Stadium, player
appearances and cobranded digital content.

• 4 Russet Potatoes
• 1 Onion
• 3 Tlb butter
Provided by Madeline and Louella
1. Preheat oven to 400. Melt butter in saucepan and slowly stir in flour. Avoid lumps. Once
blended, keep stirring over heat for about another minute.
2. Slowly add milk to mixture. Slowly increase heat while continually stirring. Let simmer
over heat for about 5 minutes. Bring mixture to a boil. It should be fairly thick by now.
3. While mixture is simmering, rub butter along sides and bottom of a quart size casserole
pan. Slice potatoes and onion. I use a vegetable slicer. Put one layer of potatoes, overlap
them a bit, and then a layer of sliced onion. Salt and pepper to taste. Be generous with the
sliced onion, it doesn’t overpower when baked.
4. The milk mixture should be thick by now, so add the shredded cheddar cheese and stir
until melted.
5. Put a light layer of cheese sauce on top of the first potato/onion layer. Repeat layers, until
out of room in pan. Pour the rest of the sauce over the top. Lift the sides of the layers up
a bit, so the sauce can leak down.
6. Cover with foil and bake about 1 1/2 hours. Take foil off and continue to bake, until top is
browned. Enjoy.•

Air Force Establishes National
Security Space Launch Program
The Air Force Space and Missile Systems

Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle program
name was officially changed to the National
Security Space Launch program. The 2019
National Defense Authorization Act directed
the name change from EELV to NSSL effective
March 1, to reflect consideration of
both reusable and expendable launch vehicles
future solicitations.
In 1994, the NDAA directed the DoD
to develop a modernization plan for space
launch capabilities. In response, the Air Force
initiated the Space Launch Modernization
Plan, also known as the Moorman Study
which identified options and cost for the
future of space launch. On Aug. 5, 1994,
President Clinton signed a National Space
Transportation Policy as a partial response
to assigning responsibility for expendable
launch vehicles to the DoD. The final result
was SMC’s EELV program to develop
a family of launch vehicles for medium to
