Earth in the Palm
of Your Hand
Article and photos
by Ben & Glinda Shipley
Whether you’re flying to Tokyo, driving to
the Grand Canyon, walking around the corner
for a quart of milk, or launching a submarinebased
ICBM into the heart of enemy territory,
the most important point in any journey is the
start—right here, right now, at this very instant
in space and time. If you have no idea where
you are, you’ll never find the way to anywhere.
So one of the great $12 billion bargains in the
history of public spending came about in 1973,
Barcelona, Spain: Columbus points south to the New World and
places it… just outside Algeria?
when the US Defense Department authorized
its NAVSTAR program—or later in the same
century, when Presidents Reagan and Clinton
handed over the program’s benefits, free of
charge, to the benefit of all humankind.
The American Global Positioning System—
or GPS—is an ingenious network of
24 individual satellites, all circling the planet
in unique, evenly distributed orbits 12 miles
above the Earth. Each satellite radiates a weak,
non-stop signal that includes its excruciatingly
accurate time and location. The idea being that,
anywhere on Earth (or in the air), a receiver
will find at least four of these signals and
calculate—to a matter of millimeters—where
it lies. From there, it’s a simple (yeah, sure!)
series of steps to figuring out the precise route
between two geographical points, along with
all the mountains, rivers, roads, buildings, tents,

trees, and fire hydrants in between. The result
has been a near-miraculous revolution in the
ease, safety, and reliability of modern travel,
not just for elites and ICBMs, but for simple
lost folk like us.
Well, maybe.

Kelly Ann Burner
Kelly Ann Therese Dowling
Burner left the World peacefully
and into the Arms of God
on January 8, 2022. Kelly was
born in Brooklyn, New York,
July 16, 1961, moving to San
Pedro with her family in 1970.
She was and remained an avid
lover of music whose favorites
included Led Zeppelin, Jimmy
Hendricks, Steely Dan, Neil
Young and many other of the
popular 70’s and 80’s bands. She enjoyed
sneaking out of the house during her high
school years to go to concerts, hang out
with her friends listening to the latest LP’s,
enjoying the beach and ocean, and just generally
having fun. However, her parents didn’t
enjoy this activity and Kelly was frequently
grounded. She dealt with this by sneaking
out of the house.
After graduating from San Pedro HS, she
started college at El Camino and worked at
Sunrise Medical, where she met many of
her lifelong friends. Even at this early age
she was an entrepreneur, working craft fairs
and helping friends out with their projects.
She eventually joined Hughes Aircraft in
El Segundo where she met her husband,
Greg. Kelly convinced Greg on numerous
occasions to sneak out of work and spend
the afternoons at the beach. She could be
very persuasive. Kelly and Greg were married
April 30, 1988 and bought a townhome
in El Segundo on Main Street. The first
two children arrived soon: Zach and Erin.
Kelly also started her first business, Worth
Repeating, on Main Street, selling gently
used children’s clothing, toys and equipment.
Kelly completed her degree at El Camino and
transferred to Chapman University just in
time to move the family to New Jersey due to
Greg’s job.
New Jersey didn’t work out so well……
The family moved back to El Segundo
in 1996 buying the family home at 802
Maryland St. The next three children came
quickly: Katherine, Emma and Ethan. After
a few additions and remodels, we finally
had enough room for all and moved Ethan’s
crib out of the bathroom. Kelly’s love of
music continued, going to concerts with
friends (still sneaking out of the house so
the kids wouldn’t know) and she saw many
of her favorites: Neil Young, The Rolling
Stones, Neil Diamond, The Cranberry’s,
and on.
As the kids got into school and sports,
we met many of our great friends and families
at Center Street, Middle School, and ESHS,
on the soccer, softball and baseball fields
around Southern California. Kelly loved
cheering all the kids on during the day,
then hanging out in the hotel lounge with
our friends in the evenings. She also discovered
her favorite place in the world, Poipu,
Kauai. Many visits there over
the years with friends or just
the family brought her closer to
the ocean. Sitting on the beach
by herself into the night, watching
the stars, listening to the
warm Hawaii waves, smelling
the salt breeze always filled her
with Peace.
The kids grew older, Kelly
turned back to her creative ways
and started Kelly’s Beach Hut,
or KBH. First doing craft fairs, a kiosk in
the mall, a small spot at Tyler’s Surfboards
and eventually her own store on Grand and
Richmond St. She put all her love for the
beach and the ocean, her eye for decorating,
and her desire to connect with and help people
into the store. She gave many local artists a
venue to display their talents. She used her
skills to design gifts and craft displays that
reflected her passion for the outdoors, using
the colors of sea, sand, and shore that she
loved so much.
When the kids were asked what they love
about their Mom, they responded:
– Her strength and Love for her kids
– She cared about us so much and she
would never back down when she cared
– How determined she is when she put
her mind to something
– Her laughter and her hugs
– Her positivity, even in tough times
– How she gave her heart and loved
fiercely, to her friends, children, and
new grandson, Dylan
– Her ability to make friends no matter
where she was, walking down the sidewalk,
shopping at Target, she talked to
everyone (much to Greg’s dismay)
– How she loved to have fun, you could
usually find her in the jacuzzi, Pacifico
in hand, watching the Dodgers
We will miss it all. Through the good times
and tough times how she worked to make
everyone feel welcome, how she laughed
and loved, and hugged, how she was the
last one to leave a party and the first one up
to start cleaning up for the next one, how
there always had to be music playing, how
you could never get her to leave the beach,
and on………
Thank you to the people in this wonderful
town, for the cards and kind words, the
flowers, and the gifts. Knowing that you care
for Kelly and miss her too makes the pain
and loss a little easier.
Kelly will be buried in the family cemetery
in Benton Ridge, Ohio on April 30th, 2022,
Kelly and Greg’s 33rd wedding anniversary.
The Family will be hosting a Celebration
for Kelly at the house (802 Maryland
St.), Saturday, March 19th from 3pm to?
Please stop by and toast Kelly!! We look
forward to seeing all of Kelly’s wonderful
friends! •
