get home as the game moved deep into the
fourth quarter and the pressure of the clock
was mounting. Then, finally, with under five
minutes, Louis Lappe found Xavier Gomez
with a pass outside the box at the top of the
arc. Xavier took one touch to set it up before
sending an absolute rocket to the top left
corner to tie the game once again 2-2. The
sidelines went bananas, and the boys had a
new sense of hope in this game. The Gundo
boys kept the pressure on as the clock wound
down in regulation, and OT looked certain.
But then, in the final minute, Gundo pushed
the ball into their box for one last attempt in
regulation. It was a mad scramble as everyone
was fighting for the ball. Finally, Caz Inghram
got control and punched it into the back of
the net to give Gundo the lead for the first
time in the entire game! Hawthorne had one
last chance and frantically pushed the ball up
field into the left-wing, then tried to cross it,
which resulted in a handball just outside the
box. The Center Ref let everyone know this
would be the final play. The Gundo boys set
up a wall and marked the posts as Cooper
Bartha readied himself in goal for the shot
while the Hawthorne player lined up for the
kick. He struck the ball w power and control,
a beautiful shot, but it sailed just barely over
the top of the crossbar - game over, Gundo
wins 3-2 and advances to the Section 1
tournament Feb 26-27 in Redlands, CA. •
