The girls’ water polo team cracked the top 10 in the latest CIF Southern Section Division 5 polls. The Lady Eagles responded with a 13-3 win over Torrance and a nice showing in the Segerstrom Tournament, going 2-3. Claire Lindsey paced her team with four goals against Torrance. Emma Romero, Maya Weiss and Emily Wilkinson each added two goals while Jenna Olson and Jordan Dornblaser chipped in one goal apiece. With the win, the Lady Eagles improved to 3-0 in Ocean League play. El Segundo competed in the 18-team Segerstrom Tournament and placed seventh. In the first game, the Lady Eagles dropped to fourthranked Claremont 14-2. In the second game, El Segundo handled Estancia 10- 3. Lindsey and Olson each had three goals. Emma Romero added two, with Dornblaser and Weiss scoring one apiece. Isabel Romero was in control in goal and made eight saves. In the third game against ninth-ranked Segerstrom, the Lady Eagles fell to a physical Jaguars team 11-4. Emma Romero led the way with three goals while Lindsey had one goal. Isabel Romero posted 11 total saves. Facing second-ranked Canyon (Anaheim) was a challenge, but El Segundo kept the match close. It just couldn’t put the ball away and lost 7-2. Lindsey and Olson each had a goal while Isabel Romero had 10 saves. In the seventh place game against Savannah, the Lady Eagles finished with a strong 8-5 victory. Olson led the team with five goals. Lindsey, Wilkinson and Dornblaser each scored one goal. El Segundo’s defense was solid and Isabel Romero had five saves. The Lady Eagles are 12-8 overall and faced second-ranked Santa Monica this past Monday. They hosted Culver City yesterday and return home next Tuesday to face Beverly Hills. News and Notes Several Eagle football players participated in the 53rd Lions All-Star game. The game that had been scheduled to be played at Mira Costa was moved to El Segundo when Costa’s field was flooded due to the rain. So on a crisp evening in between storms, the Blue team coached by El Segundo’s Steve Shevlin throttled the Silver team 31-3. Eagles who made an impact on the game were Duncan Papalii, who scored a first half rushing touchdown; Angelo Pacheco, who led the team in tackles; Isaiah Gray, who started at running back; Brandon Weldon, who started at left offensive tackle; Aston Saltz, who was a major factor carrying the ball and blocking for Gray as well as being the placekicker holder; Billy Brasher, who started at tight end and caught three passes; Haamid Brooks, Jr., who caught a long touchdown pass; and Gabe Fernan, who was a key component on the defensive line. • Duncan Papalii scored a rushing touchdown and played on the defensive line for the Blue all stars.
