Against the fifth ranked Spartans the Eagles played an inspired game with a lot of passion and wherewithal, according to Coach Hobbs. Nikki Saunders scored a late goal off an assist from Rhianna Rich in the first half to stun the Spartans. And while Brenda Cervantes made two clutch saves in goal to deny South Torrance from scoring throughout the game, Gabrielle Stratton tied the game with just under two minutes. The game ended in a 1-1 tie. You can add Rhianna Rich to the injured list. She was hurt after she assisted on the goal and was sidelined for the remainder of the game. The senior had obvious pain to her knee and was seeking medical advice for it this past Monday. Aside from Rich, who may be out, Coach Hobbs is hopeful that the three of his injured starters will be back in action this week when they open Ocean League play at Beverly Hills yesterday and at home against Culver City tomorrow; they host Hawthorne next Wednesday January 21 at 3pm. The girls’ basketball team is also having problems with injuries. Against Rosary and Santa Fe the team suited up just seven players. The Lady Eagles were trounced by Rosary 76-46 but came back to defeat Santa Fe 47-42. The Rosary Royals used their outside shooting to demolish El Segundo. The Royals connected on 15 of 21 three point shots from beyond the arch and the Eagles never had a chance. Paige Endo’s first quarter buzzer beater narrowed the deficit to 22-13 but essentially that’s as close as they came. Endo ended with 21 points while Jordan Swanier had 18 points and a game high 12 rebounds. The Lady Eagles played better defensively against Santa Fe. The game had lead changes and swings. Sarah Chang’s three pointer gave the Eagles a 21-20 lead just before halftime. Holding onto a four point lead as time was running out in the third quarter, the Chiefs’ Delilah Cardona hit a one from outside to cut El Segundo’s lead to 34-33. Morgan Gee’s three-pointer gave the Eagles a 39-36 lead with just over six minutes remaining. Swanier’s free throw and layup off an assist from Endo gave the Eagles a 42-37 advantage. With 1:24 left, the Chiefs’ Natalie Garcia cut El Segundo’s lead to 42-40 with two free throws. Endo made a running hook shot from twelve feet out and then sank a free throw to ice the game for the Eagles who improved to 9-7 on the season. The Eagles opened Ocean League play last night at home against Beverly Hills. They are on the road Friday night at Culver City at 6pm and will host Lawndale next Friday, January 21 at 6pm. The boys’ basketball team played host to West Torrance and escaped with an 52-49 thriller. James Martin, who led all scorers with 15 points gave his team 45-43 lead with just over three minutes remaining. Down the stretch Chase Ali-Watkins hit four key free throws to help ice the game. For the game Ali-Watkins converted on 10-11 free throws and ended with 12 points. The Eagles opened up league play last night against Beverly Hills, are at Culver City Friday night before playing at Chadwick on Tuesday at 7pm and away at Hawthorne Wednesday, January 21 at 7:30pm. The girls’ water polo team competed in perhaps their most challenging tournament this season. They faced top ranked Pasadena poly in the first game and lost 19-6. Though it was a learning experience for the team it gave Coach Riley Brady’s team additional motivation. Talia Dominic scored three goals while Elysse Barriga had two and Bridgette Allison one goal. In the second game the Eagles throttled Magnolia 12-2. The offense consisted of great outside shooting and a strong counterattack. Talia Dominic led the balanced scoring attack with three goals. Molly Hudson, Grace Wigginton, Elysse Barriga and Annabelle Cloutier Chaine each scored twice, while Bridgette Allison had one goal. Layla Chamberlain had eight saves for the Eagles. In the third game of the tournament and the first of three on the day for the Eagles they defeated Savanna 6-4 victory. Grace Wigginton and Talia Dominic each scored two goals while Molly Hudson and Annabelle Cloutier Chaine scored one apiece. Layla Chamberlin was solid in goal with fifteen saves. The Eagles fell to El Modena 6-1 despite 14 saves by Layla Chamberlin. El Segundo’s only goal came from Annabelle Cloutier Chaine. In the final game of the tournament the Eagles put it to Valencia 9-1. Cassidy Shevlin led the team with four goals while Molly Hudson, Talia Dominic, Stephanie Ruesler and Emma Romero each had one goal. The Eagles opened Ocean League play on Tuesday against Culver City and host Santa Monica today at 3pm. The team returns home on Monday January 26 to play Torrance at 3pm. • 1. Prepare rice according to package directions. 2. While rice cooks, sautÈ bacon pieces in 10-inch ovenproof skillet over medium heat until starting to crisp, about 5 minutes. Drain off all but 1 tablespoon bacon fat, then add scallion whites and edamame (or if desired, use 1 cup frozen green peas) to the bacon in the pan and sautÈ 1 minute. 3. Add cooked rice, and sautÈ 1 minute. In a bowl, whisk together eggs, 1/2 cup sour cream and salt. Add egg mixture to pan, swirling gently to distribute mixture evenly throughout other ingredients. Cook undisturbed for 2-3 minutes, until edges look set. Then place pan in preheated oven until set in center, about 10 minutes. 4. Mix together scallion greens with remaining 1/4 cup sour cream. Serve frittata in wedges topped with a dollop of scallion cream. •
