Brandlin Championship Games Are Set By Adam Serrao The media can forget about comparing Peyton Manning to Tom Brady for yet another season in the National Football League. Andrew Luck came into town and ruined all of that fun for everyone. That may not be all that he ruined. Now it is Luck who is looking to make a name for himself after perhaps even putting an end to Manning’s historic career. Brady will still be there, waiting. The NFC has no shortage of drama, either. Last year’s Super Bowl champs, the Seattle Seahawks, are back in contention and look to be playing their best football of the year. If probable league MVP and Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rogers has anything to say about it though, Seattle’s “Legion of Boom” may go pop. Though the outcomes are, of course, yet to be determined, the four best NFL teams are left still standing midway through January. The Super Bowl looms in the balance, but for now, there is still some very interesting football left to be played. Now that the championship games are set, we know that it will be the Indianapolis Colts vs. the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks against the Green Bay Packers. That is about all that we know, however. All four teams seem to be playing their best ball of the season. All four teams seem to be on a roll. Normally, at this time of year, it is the team that has the most momentum that goes on a run, takes down everyone in their way and hoists the Super Bowl trophy come early February. Picking that team out of this bunch would seem to be a rather tedious task. The Colts have the best young quarterback in the game on their side. That’s a good start to any sentence that is about the game of football. Coming off of a good game last Sunday night in Denver, Luck not only put together one of his first impressive road playoff performances of his career, but he knocked Peyton Manning out of playoff contention. His 265 yards and two touchdowns led the Colts to a 24-13 victory over Denver at Mile Eagles Ready for Ocean League Play By Gregg McMullin The new year is here, and with it the start of the Ocean League schedule for the El Segundo Eagles. To get ready the Eagles played their last non-league games of the year. The boys’ finished 3-2 for the two-day tournament. The boys’ soccer team has been on a tear all season long. They have a stout defense along with heady play by goalkeeper Zach Keller. The offense has been led by Grant Bemis and Santi Cardenas as well as Gilbert Cortez. To say the team is peaking is an understatement. Having already won the 32-team South Torrance Tournament, the Eagles defeated a physical Mira Costa team 1-0. The Mustangs have a proud program and they are expected to vie for the Bay League crown this year. Bemis scored the game’s only goal off an assist from Cortez in the first half. Though the Eagles pressured the ball a number of times, Mustang goalkeeper Justin Fairchild was solid and had four saves. In the second half the Mustangs played a more physical up-tempo game but the Eagles were well prepared. El Segundo head coach Andrew Kelly made key substitutions and got the most out of his roster. But according to Coach Kelly it was the play of Keller in goal that made the difference. “Zach was solid and he’s having an awfully good season.” The Eagles upped their school record start to 8-1-2 on the year. They opened Ocean League play against Beverly Hills yesterday and are on the road at Culver City Friday at 3pm. They’ll return home next Friday, January 23, to face Lawndale, the team that eliminated the Eagles from advancing to the playoffs last season. The girls’ soccer team has been inundated with injuries. Head coach Tony Hobbs says it is evocative of the start of last season when seven players were injured. Still the Lady Eagles pressed on against a Mira Costa team with the third most wins in Division 2. Though they fell 6-0 it was a couple of injuries to key players that has the team reeling in pain.
