The Youth Corps Eco Leadership Program is composed of students grades 2-12 who have a passion for caring for the environment and want to make a positive environmental difference in their school and community. Keep America Beautiful recognizes youth and schools who have exhibited an outstanding commitment to improving their community environment. Grades of Green Youth Corps students from across Los Angeles County meet at the Murad Building in El Segundo for their first quarterly meeting to discuss yearlong Green Projects to help the community. Photo by Neelofer Lodhy. TOPS Guest Speaker State Weight Loss Queen Kathy Kirby will visit El Segundo as a guest speaker for our local chapter of Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS). As a member of the Youth Corps, each student creates and implements an environmental Green Project that reflects and emphasizes their particular eco passion Grades of Green recently launched its national headquarters in El Segundo in September, where they hope to make a difference in the local community, as well as nationally. El Segundo Middle School is currently enrolled in Grades of Green’s Trash Free Lunch Challenge to divert waste and educate students about waste reducing habits. El Segundo locals Jay Aceves (ESHS ‘08) and Meera Dahyabhai (ESHS ‘07) are on a health and wellness mission to give back to the community where they grew up. Now, El Segundo has its very own free group workout! Monday Nights at 6:30pm at Library Park, it is a Fun, challenging for all levels and motivational, the workout is a perfect way to start your week out on the right foot. When you start your week off in a positive note, you build that momentum for the rest of the week. The workout includes an amazing fun filled warm up of either Freeze Tag or games of Dodgeball, and moves into either an all levels circuit workout or a walk group. What makes the workout special and effective is the fun, amazing energy, continuous support, high fives and positive mindset. City of El Segundo’s Free Tax Preparation Assistance Program Free Tax Preparation assistance is available for low income and senior citizen taxpayers. Appointments are available Tuesdays from 11am-3pm at the Joslyn Center at 339 Sheldon Street, El Segundo from February 3 - April 14, 2015. Qualified taxpayers must bring 2014 records of all income and deductions including W-2s, 1099s, pension and social security statements, interest and dividend income, and 2013 tax return documents to appointment.
