Maximillian is a 2-year. 5 months old, male
German Shepard mix who wants to be a part
of the action. He’s a strong, sweet, happy
dog who appreciates a good brushing and
being pet. He would do best as the pet in the
household and would do well with an owner
with previous experience. https://spcala.com/

Kemer Brett (1967-1981), Bobby Floyd (player
1968-1974 and coach 2001-2004), George Brett
(1973-1993), Scott McGregor (1974-1986), Zak
Shinall (1993), and Billy Traber (2003-2009).
And one other, Derryl Cousins, umpired over
4500 Major League games from 1979-2012.
You can add Lars Nootbaar to that list now.
The 2015 graduate made his Major League
debut on June 22 for the St Louis Cardinals
and got his very first hit on June 23, a triple.
Nootbaar finished the season with 117 at bats,
hitting .240 with five home runs and no doubt
a spot on the 2022 roster.
El Segundo Girls Softball 10U
All Stars Finish an Impressive
All-Star Season
The El Segundo Girls Softball 10u All-
Stars finished tied for 7th at the Nationals
Tournament that was played in Sacramento.
El Segundo faced teams from Northern and
Southern California but the highlight of the
tournament was a come-from-behind victory
over Torrance. During the All-Star season, this
summer El Segundo played in 27 games and
competed in seven tournaments. They have had
the opportunity to travel throughout Southern
California for various tournaments, including
locations in Lancaster, Oxnard, and Laguna
Niguel. The team consisted of Kate Summers,
Chloe Fitzgerald, Delaney McAndrews,
Brooklynn Wilson, Violet Acensio, Isabella
Martinez, Emma Navarro, Valerie Williams,
Lily Dull, Gabriella Sanchez, Avery Stein and
Charlee Cline.
Roller Hockey Rink
Makes Improvements
A much-needed and long overdue renovation
of the city’s roller hockey rink at Rec Park
took place and was completed. Thanks in part
to a partnership with the Los Angeles Kings,
the rink over went a complete makeover and
much-needed repairs. The El Segundo Inline
Hockey Association played a brief summer
session to get ready for the season that is
currently in action.
City Crowns Softball Champions
The El Segundo Summer Coed City Softball
League played their season throughout the
summer on weeknights. The league was filled
with experienced former high school, colligate,
and professional baseball players. Former
Eagle standouts playing in the championship
round included Scot Nicol, RJ Fuhr, Ethan
Burner, Nigel Nootbaar, Grant Palmer, Ricky
Clark, Seth McKenna, Mike Bundy and Max
Mendoza. In the final Team Hype upset Slice
and Pint 12-5.
High School Sports
Started up Again
With high schools returning to their
classrooms and the Pandemic seemingly
under control, high school sports returned to
action. Fall sports returned to play their schedules
during their natural time frame. The football
team started the season opportunistically; the
girls’ volleyball team advanced to the CIF
Southern Section playoffs, the boy’s water polo
team finished strong, and the girl’s tennis team
took the long path to the playoffs.
Football Team Stumbles
After Great Start
The Eagles started their 2021 season with
an undefeated non-league schedule going 5-0.
The Pioneer League schedule was more of a
challenge, and they went 0-5. The winless
league mark is a little misleading since those
five losses came to all five teams that advanced
and won at least one game in the CIF Southern
Section playoffs. In three of those losses, El
Segundo was in a position to win.
Girls Volleyball
The Eagles returned to the CIF playoffs
after a hiatus from a canceled 2020 season.
The football team ended their season with a 5-5 record.
They went into the CIF Southern Section
Division 4 playoffs with an impressive 14-5
record. They faced Vistamar in the first round
and swept the Vikings in three games. Then
they defeated University (Irvine) in front of a
loud and boisterous enthusiastic crowd 25-10,
25-16, 14-25, 16-26, 15-8. It set up a trip
to face Alemany in the quarter-finals. The
Eagles stretched Warriors to five games in
one of the most entertaining five-game high
school set you’ll witness. The Eagles fell to
the eventual CIF champions in an epic match
25-14, 15-25, 25-20, 17-25, 9-15.
Water Polo Team
Stymied in First Round
The Eagles ran the table in the Pioneer League
and was a combined 17-10 overall. It was the
program’s 37th league title dating back to their
first one in 1947. Their non-league schedule
was an arduous one that included facing 16
teams that reached the CIF-SS playoffs. The
Eagles were rewarded for their league title by
drawing a first-round CIF Southern Section
Division 2 at home against perhaps one of the
top teams in Division 2. The season came
to an end with a 16-12 defeat at the hands
of El Dorado.
Girls’ Tennis Team Run
Comes to an End
The Eagles had a difficult path to reach the
CIF playoffs. After defeating Torrance, in a
qualifier, to secure a CIF playoff berth they
had another play-in match to advance to the
first round. In 2019 they had played their way
to the semi-finals. El Segundo would play
their league play-in match, wild card match,
and first-round match, all on the road. The
Eagles’ 17-1 wild card win over Oxnard meant
they had to travel the following day again to
Fullerton to play the top-ranked Sunny Hills.
Unfortunately, the Eagles’ CIF run came to
an end with a 12-6 defeat.
It was a great year for sports in El Segundo,
and more action is expected for this New
Year. If you find the opportunity get out
and attend some sporting events and support
our athletes. They’re young for such a short
time, but their memories of your support will
last a lifetime. •
The Roller Hockey Rink at Rec Park got needed improvements thanks in part to the generosity of the Los Angeles Kings. Bailey the
King’s mascot helped out at the ribbon cutting ceremony.
The girls’ tennis team worked through adversity to advance to the CIF Southern Section playoffs.
Seniors from the girls’ volleyball team helped the Eagles advance to the CIF Southern Section quarter-finals playoffs.
