and eight receiving TDs), Matt Romero (19
TD passes and eight rushing TDs) and Tim
Schartz (114 total tackles) led the team to
another successful season.
For the second year in a row, the Eagles
defeated Mira Costa in what was another
signature win for the program. El Segundo
took control early by going 74 yards in nine
plays for a touchdown on its first possession,
McEntee’s 20-yard touchdown run set the tone
for the Eagles. The Mustangs countered later
in the game with a short-drive touchdown
run to make it 7-6 when Schartz blocked
the PAT. McEntee then returned the ensuing
kickoff and dazzled the Mustang special
teams by going 90 yards for a touchdown.
After a scoreless third quarter, the Eagles
tacked on a touchdown on a six-play, 63-yard
drive midway in the fourth quarter. McEntee
scored his third touchdown of the night on
a one-yard burst behind the blocking of Jess
Caravello and Gunnar Rogers.
The Eagles finished 5-0 in non-league action
and lost to Lawndale and Culver City in
the Ocean League and finished third. Their
reward for finishing 8-2 during the regular
season was facing second-seeded El Modena.
They lost to the Vanguards 38-22 in the first
round of the CIF playoffs.
A number of Eagles were rewarded for
their efforts and named to the All-Ocean
League. Second team offense honors went
to Taj Balogun, Gunner Rogers, Tim Flores
and Dar Sayson. Second team defense went
to Tyler Villalobos and Jorge Montani. First
team offense honors went to Jess Caravello
(center), Devin Bonney (WR), Danny McEntee
(RB) and Matt Romero (QB). First team
defense went to Tim Schartz (LB), Kyle
Freeman (DB), Alex Ron (DE) and Shawn
Lyon (DE). Schartz was named the team’s
Defensive MVP and Scholar Athlete of the
Year. Matt Romero was named the team’s
Offensive MVP and Danny McEntee was
named the team’s MVP at a recent banquet
honoring the 2017 squad.
Boys’ Water Polo Team
Continued its Success
Kyle Crist, Jaden van der Woude, Mason
Jaeger, Cameron Dornblaser, Brian Schodorf,
Nolan Young, Caden Kastigar and Owen Hale
led the team to another successful season.
The Eagles finished 20-7 overall and 7-1
in the Ocean League. It marked the fourth
consecutive season the Eagles had won at
least 20 games and won or shared the Ocean
League title.
In the opening round, the Eagles faced
Orange County powerhouse Edison of Huntington
Beach. El Segundo’s 14-12 win over
the Chargers was played with as much emotion
as any this season. The Eagles’ momentum
in the first round started to carry over in the
second round against top-seeded Ayala High
School. With confidence on their side, the
Eagles jumped out to an early 2-1 lead by
the end of the first quarter behind goals from
Crist and Hale. The second quarter went back
and forth and it was tied 5-5 heading into
the second half. Any thoughts of an upset
were pushed aside in the second half and
the Eagles fell 11-9.
Kurke and Pearson Lead
Volleyball Team
Maddie Kurke and Alyssa Pearson led
the Lady Eagles to a 19-12 overall season
record and a CIF- Southern Section Division
4 quarterfinal appearance. It marked the third
consecutive season El Segundo had advanced
to the round of eight. The team finished third
in the Ocean League with a 6-4 record behind
top-ranked Culver City and third-ranked Santa
Monica. The Lady Eagles advanced to the
first round of the CIF-SS Division 4 playoffs.
El Segundo placed third in the Valley
Christian/Bellflower tournament, going
4-2 and losing to eventual champion Oaks
Christian twice. Kurke hit 0.366, finishing
with 72 kills over six games, and she took
home all-tournament honors.
In the postseason, El Segundo defeated
Downey in the first round 25-12, 25-20, 24-26,
25-19. In the second round, the Lady Eagles
toppled Moorpark 25-22, 25-21, 14-25, 25-
23. They were ultimately swept by Cypress
in the quarterfinals.
Boys’ and Girls’ Cross Country
Teams Win Ocean League
Titles and History
Both boys’ and girls’ cross country squads swept
to Ocean League titles at the challenging Kenneth
Hahn State Park course. Noah Fenton led the
Eagles and finished second overall in 16:43. The
girls’ team had all seven team members finish
in the top 13 runners to win the Ocean League
title. Nicole Fulcomer led the Lady Eagles by
placing third (19:50), while Sophia Zago was
fourth (19:51), James Matlosz fifth (20:17),
Gabby Lee sixth (20:30), Alyana Verfallie eighth
(20:46), Hoffman 11th and Kate Johnson 13th.
Both boys’ and girls’ cross country teams competed
at the CIF-SS Cross Country Division 4
prelims at Riverside City Cross Country Course.
The boys placed seventh in their heat of 24 teams,
while the girls finished a close second behind La
Canada. Both teams advanced to the CIF Finals.
At the CIF Finals, held at Riverside City
Cross Country course, the boys’ team took
fourth place medals home out of 24 teams.
The Eagles were paced by sophomore Arend
Verfaillie, who finished 27th overall with time
of 16:20. Close behind were Fenton and Garrett
Rifkin, who finished within a second of
Verfaillie at 16:21.4 and 16.21.5 respectively.
The Lady Eagles finished an eye-popping
third place, paced by sophomore sensation
Matlosz who finished 18th overall and led her
team with a 18:35.1. Nikki Fulcomer 18:44.5,
Zago 18:46.0 and Lee 19:15.7 all finished in
the top 36 out of 169 runners.
So for the first time in school history, both
the boys’ and girls’ teams advanced to the CIF
State Cross Country championship. The boys’
team finished a respectable ninth. Rifkin led the
Eagles with a 16:47, while Fenton and Ryan
Hoerner crossed the finish line in identical
times of 17:17.8. The Lady Eagles finished
seventh, as Matlosz led her team with a 13th
place finish overall at 18:46.3.
