State of the Region The 2013 State of the Region address was given by Congresswoman Maxine Waters and Congressman Henry Waxman at the Doubletree by Hilton in Torrance on November 25. Waters expressed her appreciation to the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce, which presented the event and reviewed areas showing improvement including housing, unemployment, healthcare, transportation, high-tech industry and education. Congressman Waxman expressed his displeasure regarding the recent government shutdown and noted the issues facing Congress including the pending budget deadline and need to reach compromise. Janet Payne of the Torrance Historical Society won a seat on the 2014 Torrance Rose Float “Everybody Plays.” The Torrance Float Association decided to have an Opportunity Drawing. “Ride of Your Life,”  as a fundraiser for the 2014 Rose Float, with tickets selling at $10 each. They sold 201 tickets. In the past, float riders could “buy a seat” for $1,000. The event took place at the LA Galaxy Soccer Center in Torrance. The winning ticket was pulled by Joseph Good, a Torrance soccer player, while the TRFA Board of Directors looked on.
