Story and photos by TerriAnn Ferren With Hanukkah and Christmas behind us, most people are thinking about what to do tonight on New Year’s Eve. From parties with traditions that run the gamut from my family – of eating a grape for every stroke of the clock at midnight, to my cousins Pennsylvania Dutch tradition of eating pork with sauerkraut and dumplings, there are many ways New Year’s Eve is celebrated. Here in the United States, most of us either attend a party of some sort with family or friends, watch the variety of New Year’s Eve programs carried live (or tape delayed in our case) on television, or spend a quiet evening at home. Rose Float decorators will be making sure everything is perfect for the New Year’s Day Parade, and those who participate in the parade surely would be ‘sawing logs’ early, one would think. But then you never know. Some years, I stay home and watch television trying to stay awake until midnight. Usually, my parents call me to wish me a Happy New Year. One New Year’s, not that long ago, I was invited to a friend’s home and I took along the grapes for everyone to have at midnight. The only thing was, buy the time midnight came some people had already eaten their grapes! On a cold and drizzly day last week, I spoke with Jake Epstein, age 18, who attends El Camino College. Studying to become an EMC, with his goal on becoming a nurse, Jake has his path clearly defined. I asked him what his plans were for New Year’s Eve and he eagerly told me, “I am probably going to be spending it with my girlfriend and probably family – mostly the girlfriend [Pamela]. Actually, for the last four years, we have been spending New Year’s together.” Then I asked Jake if he makes New Year’s resolutions and he said, “Usually, but by the first or second week I fall through them…the typical ‘get fit’ and ‘save money’ [resolutions].” Jake offered advice Happy New Year from the Torrance Tribune. for the New Year, “Don’t fall for the typical schemes – just be yourself. Just work it out – everything will fall into place, and you don’t have to rush everything.” Sounds like good advice, especially from someone so young. Later that afternoon, as the drizzle became a soft rain, I spoke with Katie Kostelak while shopping, who told me she is expecting her first child, a daughter - and when I asked her what she plans for New Year’s Eve she smiled broadly and said, “I might be having a baby on New Year’s Eve! It [the baby] was due last Friday and my induction is scheduled for the 31st. Hopefully, before the New Year.” She told me she is a little nervous but mostly excited and is ninety-five per cent ready for what the New Year brings - with the life-changing event of having a child. She told me they haven’t decided upon a name for the baby as yet, because they want to see her before they choose, but they have narrowed it down to three names. No, she didn’t tell me the three names they are debating between. Katie added that she doesn’t make New Year’s resolutions. Lastly, Mauricio Monnaco told me his story, “I was living in Nashville and remember the girl, who is now my ex, and we were about to meet and I didn’t know how to meet her – we were talking for a few hours over Facebook and it was funny, I just threw it out as a – hey want to go – and I sang her that song [What Are You Doing New Year’s?] and I recorded it [for her]. It was a long distance relationship and it was very hard. So it [the song] always brings back memories.” This year, Mauricio isn’t sure what he will do but might spend New Year’s Eve with his mom and friends and is not one to make New Year’s resolutions. Traditions for New Year’s Eve include, kissing, toasting, and in my case, eating grapes. And lots of people, like me, will be watching the Rose Parade and game on New Year’s Day. As 2015 comes to a close, I find myself reflecting on all that has happened in our town and in our world. Some years are easier than others - and I have to admit, there have been a few years that I have been happy to see end. As 2016 begins, I think back over the year, but more importantly, I focus on the future with a fresh, clean slate. No one knows what 2016 will bring, but I hope and pray that peace and love will fill the citizens of Torrance, and everyone, everywhere.
