The year is 1916 – Woodrow Wilson is re-elected President, World Series seats go up from $3 to $5 (which was an outrage!), our beloved San Diego Zoo is founded and my mother Aurora Sierra is born on October 26. In 1938 Aurora turned 22 and the sketch by her journalist friend was drawn from her photograph, which showed her still sporting the 1920s wavy hair and thin eyebrows fashion. Aurora enjoyed life and still does to this day! She had postponed marriage as long as she possibly could until meeting Edward Sierra who she married in 1947. They had three children – Edward, Maria and Bertha who were raised in Gardena, California when the city had drive-through dairies and fields of strawberries and corn as far as the eye could see. Every Christmas season throughout the years was the time for the huge undertaking of making tamales. The preparation of the masa, which is the most important part of the process, took considerable time and effort. This was followed by sorting and soaking corn husks, meat preparation and measuring the seasonings. This tradition lives on to this day and Aurora still checks the texture of the masa Aurora inspired the family to open the Tortilla Cantina restaurant in 2010 and of course she wanted to serve tamales at Christmas! Her daughter Chef/Owner Bert Sierra and grandson General Manager/Owner Rick Gomez debuted Aurora’s tamales in 2014 and she continues to examine the masa and give her blessing to each year’s batch. The Tortilla Cantina tamale season is going on now through the month of December. Come in for a tasty treat. - Provided by Bert Sierra, Tortilla Cantina Auto Theft 12/6/2015 9:30:00 AM 1000 BLOCK BEECH AVE Stolen vehicle: ‘00 Ford Explorer Burglary-Residential 12/5/2015 9:00:00 PM 22900 BLOCK WALNUT ST Suspect(s) removes screen, attempts to pry open window/no entry, no loss Theft 12/5/2015 4:42:20 PM 2700 BLOCK SKYPARK DR Suspect(s) takes property from purse as victim shops/wallet Burglary-Auto 12/5/2015 9:00:00 AM TORRANCE BLVD & COTA AVE Suspect(s) enters possibly unlocked vehicle and takes property/ tote, laptop, mouse, passport, wallet, charger, cosmetics Burglary-Auto 12/4/2015 8:00:54 PM 19800 BLOCK HAWTHORNE BLVD Suspect(s) smashes window for entry and takes property/ backpack, laptop, headphones, medication, book Burglary-Auto 12/4/2015 6:30:00 PM 21800 BLOCK HAWTHORNE BLVD Suspect(s) enters unlocked vehicle and takes property/documents, clothes, cash Vandalism 12/7/2015 6:30:00 AM 300 BLOCK PASEO DE ARENA Suspect(s) etches graffiti in metal door and damages window screen Battery-Simple 12/4/2015 1:58 PM 2200 BLOCK AMAPOLA CT Suspect slaps victim in the face Battery-Simple 12/4/2015 9:44:58 AM 21300 BLOCK HAWTHORNE BLVD Suspect grabs victim’s wrists and pushes her Theft 12/4/2015 9:04 AM 300 BLOCK PASEO DE LA PLAYA Suspect(s) takes secured property from bed of truck/ bicycles Burglary-Residential 12/4/2015 6:30:00 PM 1700 BLOCK ARLINGTON AVE Suspect(s) enters open window and takes property/jewelry, cash, pins from ’68 Olympics Auto Theft 12/3/2015 10:56 PM 3600 BLOCK REDONDO BEACH BLVD Stolen vehicle: ‘97 Honda Civic Burglary-Commercial 12/4/2015 8:00:00 AM 2700 BLOCK SEPULVEDA BLVD Suspect(s) smashes glass door for entry and takes property/cash Burglary-Auto 12/4/2015 11:30:00 AM 3400 BLOCK GARNET ST Suspect(s) enters unlocked vehicle and takes property/documents, GPS Burglary-Auto 12/4/2015 12:10:00 AM 21300 BLOCK HAWTHORNE BLVD Suspect(s) enters vehicle by unknown means, ransacks and takes property/ stereo, subwoofers, amplifier, backpack Theft 12/3/2015 8:30:00 PM 3900 BLOCK ARTESIA BLVD Suspect(s) pries open gas pump panel and takes property/ electronics Burglary-Auto 12/3/2015 7:39 PM 3500 BLOCK CARSON ST Suspect(s) smashes window for entry and takes property/ wallet Burglary-Auto 12/4/2015 5:00:00 PM 600 BLOCK PASEO DE LA PLAYA Suspect(s) enters unlocked vehicle, ransacks and takes property/ keys Auto Theft 12/3/2015 6:00:00 PM 100 BLOCK VIA COLUSA Stolen vehicle: ‘02 Ford Explorer Theft 12/3/2015 7:30:00 PM 20000 BLOCK INGRUM WAY Suspect(s) takes property from porch/ delivered parcel Vandalism 12/3/2015 3:45:00 PM 800 BLOCK MAPLE AVE Suspect(s) scratches victim’s vehicle’s paint Vandalism 12/3/2015 2:40 PM 22100 BLOCK HAWTHORNE BLVD Suspect(s) damages display case Vandalism 12/3/2015 2:27 PM 4500 BLOCK 186TH ST Suspect(s) enters vehicle by unknown means See Police Reports, page 10
