I run into kids at the grocery store who still remember me, and that to me is the greatest thing. Some kids who were on the edge at school are now coaching and have kids themselves, those are the great stories.” Officer Pitts thanked everyone present including Chief of Police Mark Matsuda, who early on in his career was partnered with Pitts. “Making it to 36 years is quite a feat in itself but doing it in the way that you did, serving the community, impacting generations of North High students and also generations of police officers is great,” Chief Matsuda said to Pitts during the meeting. “I remember coming on as a young officer and working with you in those early years; not everybody was as friendly as Chester and that alone helped young folks integrate into the department and has a lasting impression.” Three decades of service and experience will be difficult to replace but the legacy left behind is not one that will be easily forgotten. “It was a very hard decision. I have been off for a while and it was just time. A lot of guys leave at 50 and I just turned 59,” Officer Pitts said. “I love my job but I got to the point where it was just time.” “I just want to say thank you to everybody for your recognition,” Latham said. “It was a fun 36 years, actually. Mr. Jackson, everybody, I want everybody to have a wonderful life but I will be seeing you in Torrance.
