Sutherlin also asked residents to be ready to leave the moment an evacuation is ordered, as well as suggesting that residents maintain their vehicle at a minimum of half a tank of gas. Sutherlin emphasized the need for residents to register for the city’s emergency alerts system, Torrance Alerts, which is intended to help keep residents updated should the City or region experience a significant event such as an earthquake, fire, public health emergency or similar situation. “We encourage you to sign in and register for Torrance Alerts, especially when it comes to time-sensitive information,” Sutherlin said. “If you opt in, there is a weather opt-in portal with El Niño and other weather-related events. Providing as much information as possible increases your chances of being notified. “Help spread the word. We are all community ambassadors with this program,” Sutherlin said. “The only way this information gets out is if we are urging people to register. This is a community effort: not just a ‘you and me.’ We need to help each other and get the message out through different mediums.” To register for Torrance Alerts, persons interested can visit: http://www.torranceca. gov/TorranceAlerts/. • Police Reports from page 2 Stolen vehicle: ‘13 Jeep Patriot Theft 11/17/2015 5:00:00 AM 18300 BLOCK KINGSDALE AVE Suspect(s) takes property from park lights/ copper wire Burglary-Auto 11/17/2015 12:15:39 PM 3500 BLOCK 171ST ST Suspect(s) punches door lock/ no entry, no loss Burglary-Auto 11/17/2015 8:30:00 AM 3400 BLOCK EMERALD ST Suspect(s) enters vehicle by unknown means and takes property/ stereo, CDs Auto Theft 11/16/2015 6:40 PM 2000 BLOCK REDONDO BEACH BLVD Stolen vehicle: ‘97 Honda Accord Burglary-Auto 11/17/2015 9:00:00 AM AMIE AVE & 178TH ST Suspect(s) punches door lock for entry and takes property/tools • Seniors from page 3 or AIDS • Anyone who has injected drugs, even just once or many years ago • Anyone with abnormal liver tests or liver disease • Anyone on hemodialysis How do you get tested? Physicians use a blood test called a hepatitis C antibody test to determine if a person has been infected with HCV. If the results come back non-reactive, or negative for antibodies, the person does not have HCV. If it is reactive, or positive for antibodies, the person has been infected at some point but does not necessarily have the virus at that time. A second blood test, called an RNA or PCR test, is needed to confirm if the person is currently infected with HCV. What should you do if you have the chronic hepatitis C virus? If both tests indicate a person is infected with HCV, it is important to consult a hepatitis C specialist to discuss the opportunity for treatment and to potentially be cured. Mary recently finished taking a treatment regimen that has made the virus undetectable in her blood. She is hopeful that she will get the official word (three months after the end of treatment) that she is cured. “I had pretty much given up hope that there could be a cure for me,” Mary said. “But there are more HCV treatment options available than there used to be.” She encourages anyone who thinks they may be at risk to ask their doctor to be screened and, if diagnosed, seek care from a hepatitis C specialist. The Spartans (7-3, 3-2) biggest loss came just two weeks before when they got walloped by Leuzinger. The loss ultimately gave Leuzinger (4-6, 3-2) the tie-breaker between the two teams in the standings and had the Olympians in the playoffs while South’s season was unfortunately ended abruptly as the odd-man out. Cameron Dillon sparked the Spartan offense all season long at the running back posession while Noa Harrison, despite an injury late in the year, was a major difference maker for South. Head coach Rock Hollis and the Torrance Tartars must have felt like the odd-man out all season long this year. While the other three team’s from Torrance were battling for the playoffs, the Tartars (3-7, 1-4) were rumbling through a rough season that saw the team lose to Mira Costa, Peninsula and El Segundo of the Bay League in addition to South North and West from the Pioneer League. Despite their rough season, however, there were highlights for Hollis and company. Quarterback Ryan Carroll led the way on offense for Torrance as the team not only blew out Morninside (61-21) and Lawndale (49-0) early in the season, but they also had a nice league win at home against Centennial to stay out of the cellar of the Pioneer League. Sometimes, football isn’t all about winning and losing. Coach Rock Hollis said it best about the season that his team had this year. “My boys never gave up and we always fought till the last second,” Hollis explained. “That’s what we teach here. Of course we wanted to win league, of course we wanted to make CIF playoffs but coaching is about developing young men and that’s what I’m so proud of.” A sentiment like that can only make the player, parents and onlookers proud of Hollis and the Tartars as well. A mindset like that means that it will be no time at all before the Tartars are right back in the thick of things in the Pioneer League divisional race. - Asixlion@earthlink.net• C e r t i f i e d a n d L i c e n s e d P r o f e s s i o n a l s KEEP IT LOCAL NEW LOWER RATES! 26 weeks (6 months) is only $400 52 weeks (1 year) is only $750 If you have any questions call us at 310-322-1830.
